About The Position

The JSRTP Summer Intern will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in projects aimed at tackling the complexities of cancer research. They will be mentored by a University of Kansas Cancer Center member, and trained in lab techniques specific to the type of research conducted within the mentor’s lab. Each Summer Intern will complete a research project during the program, prepare a research poster about the results of the project, and present the poster to the public during the Summer Student Research Symposium. They will also participate in all lab meetings, be trained in basic lab protocols, and work with other Cancer Center research personnel to facilitate their learning and professional development experiences. The JSRTP program is an 8-week program will run from June 1 – July 24, 2026. Applicants must complete the entire 8-week program. Interviews for selected students will be held in March.

Requirements

  • Education: Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate, graduate, MD, or MD/PhD program.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • This internship requires enrollment for a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.
  • Work Experience: Interest in various areas of cancer research (ex. Basic wet lab, clinical, dry lab, behavioral/population health etc.)

  • Cover letter including: Personal statement. Interest(s) in clinical research and cancer. Details of any laboratory training completed. Current GPA ( The finalist will be asked to provide a copy of transcripts directly to Human Resources. Please do not upload transcripts with your application.)
  • 1-3 letters of recommendation from a teacher, faculty member, professional (non-family member).

  • Work Experience: Prior exposure to research through coursework, volunteer and shadow experiences, and/or direct lab experience.

Responsibilities

  • Complete all required lab safety modules pertinent to the type of research being conducted (wet lab, clinical, dry lab, behavioral/population health etc.) within the first 2 weeks of employment.
  • Learn all lab techniques, operation of lab equipment, basic lab protocol required to complete research project.
  • Work with mentor and lab personnel on the research project designed by mentor and intern in the application process.
  • Write up lab reports and progress on project as required.
  • Summarize results of research project through the creation and presentation of a research poster.
  • Attend Cancer Center events, seminars, lab meetings with mentor and lab group.
  • Participate in developing technical and professional lab skills in the area of research being conducted.
  • Learn to properly use lab equipment as project requires.
  • Interact and learn about area of research through mentor, lab personnel, and other Cancer Center faculty.
  • Develop presentation skills for poster symposium.
  • Prepare a final poster presentation summarizing the results of the research project.
  • Complete any final requirements of the project, and write up these results in a final progress report.
