About The Position

Sisu offers emergency shelter, drop-in services, case management support, and housing options to youth and young adults ages 15-24 experiencing homelessness. The Substitute Youth Care Coordinator will serve as a substitute by picking up morning, evening, and/or overnight shifts. The Substitute Youth Care Coordinator is responsible for supervising youth in the program and maintaining a safe, clean, respectful, hospitable, and professional shelter environment. The Substitute Youth Care Coordinator will have varied tasks including supervision of clients in the shelter and drop-in setting, engaging with volunteers, housekeeping, laundry and food service. The Youth Care Coordinator is a nonexempt employee reporting to the Program Manager.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be highly organized, flexible, able to work independently, and willing to assist in conflict resolution
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including customer service, patience, empathy and compassion
  • Effective communication skills, including active listening, writing, speaking and reading comprehension
  • Work within deadlines and scheduled timelines
  • Willingness to cover shifts with a short notice
  • Basic computer skills, with proficiency in Google Workspace and other computer applications
  • Ability to operate in a trauma-informed manner with young people who may be experiencing mental health issues or substance use disorders
  • Ability to pass background check consistent with organizational and state requirements
  • Staff is required to remain awake for the duration of their shifts
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and lift items over 25 pounds
  • Ability to use telephone, PC, copy machine, printer, and other office equipment
  • Ability to use washer, dryer, and other household equipment - ie. Mop, broom, etc.
  • Near vision sufficient to read written communications, computer printouts, etc.
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person and by phone
  • Reliable transportation required

  • Experience with youth, mental health, social services or program administration a plus

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision of clients and continuously monitor the shelter and drop-in environment to ensure safety and security
  • Engage clients in activities, skill-building, games, curriculum, or conversation to further program goals and positive youth development
  • Assist clients in planning, attaining necessities, engaging with providers, maintaining routines, meeting deadlines, and completing scheduled activities
  • Answer program calls, texts, and emails promptly, document important information, and communicate clearly and consistently with staff, clients, and service providers
  • Document daily services in Infoflo and HMIS, maintain accurate client files, read and update shift notes
  • Perform light housekeeping and execute cleaning tasks. Oversee client chores and assist with cleaning dorms, offices, storage, and resetting for the next day.
  • Collect, document, and sort donations
  • Maintain consistency in delivery of service and adherence to program policies
  • Collaborate with case managers to further program and client goals
  • Lead, assist, and engage with volunteers as needed
  • Conduct intakes and assessments for clients as directed
  • Provide a positive customer service experience to clients, volunteers, service partners, staff members, neighbors, and donors
  • Represent Sisu with professionalism and commitment to enhancing the organization’s community profile
  • Promote community education projects to help increase awareness of Sisu and homeless youth missions
  • Read and respond to company-wide updates and direct messages delivered via email, Slack or other company communication channels throughout shift
  • Use trauma-informed care techniques to create a safe environment for the youth
  • Perform other duties as assigned
