About The Position

Self Help Inc. is currently looking for reliable, flexible Substitute Teachers to join our team. Agency Profile Self Help, Inc. is a nonprofit Community Action Agency (CAA) created to help families and individuals stabilize and secure their lives through education, strategic assistance, and building opportunities in their communities. We provide a range of services for families and households across Southeastern Massachusetts. Job Summary Substitute Teachers will provide temporary coverage in our Head Start classrooms. As a Substitute Teacher, you will step into the role of the regular classroom teacher, ensuring the continuation of a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for preschool children. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the well-being and education of young children in our community and gain experience within the Head Start framework

Requirements

  • Must pass a criminal background check and other required clearances
  • Must have or be willing to obtain CPR and First Aid certification
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the position, including the ability to lift and carry young children, bend, stoop, and actively engage with children
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is required
  • Ability to supervise and interact positively with young children
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in different classroom settings and with varying age groups (typically 3-5 years old in Head Start)
  • Patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in working with young children
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently
  • Basic understanding of classroom management techniques
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Some experience working with preschool-aged children in a group setting is preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with early childhood development principles is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and positive classroom environment that promotes learning and social-emotional development
  • Supervise children in the classroom, during outdoor play, meals, and transitions, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times
  • Follow established classroom routines and schedules
  • Adhere to all Head Start Performance Standards, state licensing regulations, and program policies and procedures
  • Implement the existing lesson plans and activities provided by the regular classroom teacher
  • Engage children in age-appropriate activities that promote cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language development
  • Read stories, lead songs, and facilitate group activities
  • Adapt activities as necessary to meet the diverse needs of the children in the classroom
  • Follow any specific instructions or notes left by the regular classroom teacher
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families
