About The Position

Substitute Paraeducator Job Description Required Attachments: Resume, Cover Letter and 3 Letters of Reference Essential Functions: Must have regular attendance Must demonstrate good judgment and common sense Must demonstrate courtesy and tact when dealing with students, staff and patrons Must be capable of standing/walking/ stooping/ bending without restrictions Must have the ability to reach, grasp, handle and grip without difficulty on a continuous basis Must be able to lift 20 lbs. without assistance and up to 100 lbs. with additional adult assistance Rare to occasional pushing and pulling depending on work assignment Must have the ability to get along with students, staff and public Possess the ability to train and provide in-service to substitute employees. Implement specially designed instruction and related services and document student performance Maintain a positive relationship with students with challenging behaviors while Be aware of health, safety and emergency procedures of the school district consistently implementing the behavior plan and consequences Know the role and responsibility of being a special education paraeducator Be aware of the requirements of confidentiality for educational and medical records Specific Duties and Responsibilities: This position could include but not be limited to the following duties: Perform all academic functions in basic areas of instruction and assist students in those areas Become familiar with classroom terminology Working knowledge of available materials and their use to assist in planning individual programs Provide supplementary support of the skills taught in the classroom Maintain discipline in instructional or unstructured (playground, cafeteria) areas Implement behavioral programs in a class, group or individual setting, especially with students who have challenging behaviors in a calm and consistent manner using appropriate de-escalation techniques Reinforce and maintain instruction as directed by the teacher Clerical duties as required for the general instruction program and/or special education program Awareness of the programs and objectives of the teacher, student and curriculum in those areas assigned Gather such materials for the continuation of the school program as needed by the teacher Uphold the confidential nature of matters concerning students, teachers, and the school Assist in adaptive physical program or therapeutics as directed including swim program and/or physical education classes as needed (Ed Asst. maybe expected to be in pool with students) Meet the physical needs of the student (could include personal hygiene issues, self-help issues, and may require lifting) Be willing to learn basic sign language, if needed Mark/score tests and correct pupil work, at times administer selective tests Type and/or reproduce materials for Special Education use Distribute and account for materials and equipment Maintain a neat and orderly station environment Operate audiovisual equipment, office machines, computers, etc Attend training sessions for professional development Monitor classroom when requested by building principal Maintain neat and clean personal appearance Demonstrate a willingness to receive and follow directions Maintain personable and friendly relations between themselves and other faculty members Other duties as assigned

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must meet at least one of the following three options:
  • Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education.
  • Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree.
  • Met a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment:
  • Knowledge of and the ability to assist instructing reading, writing, and mathematics, (2), as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness.
  • Must be physically capable (size and strength) of assisting the other adult if there is an aggressive student
  • Proof of citizenship (driver's license, birth certificate, social security card, passport, etc.)
  • Background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Training in restraint, crisis management, and de-escalation are preferred. (Note: Restraint is only used if people were in imminent danger)
  • Background in working with behaviors and/or defusing crisis situations desired
  • First aid and CPR certification.
  • Type II driving permit (willingness to get one if required for the job).
  • Good organizational and communication skills. Clerical abilities, computer knowledge, ability to work independently.
