About The Position

Selection for interview is based on evaluation of complete application file. Employment offer is based on employee evaluations, discipline history and attendance records, training and experience, references, and interview results. Hourly rate placement contingent upon verification of related WA public school experience. This position is included in the classified staff non-supervisory bargaining unit. Union shop requirements and the Collective Bargaining Agreement apply to this position. Employment contingent upon completion and verification of form information and background check with fee to be paid by applicant. Pay for contracted classified employees is distributed once/month on the last business day of the month. Pay for employees who work less than full year is spread through August. Questions concerning pay processes may be directed to the Personnel Office. Eligibility for SEBB medical, dental, vision, life insurance, AD&D, and LTD if anticipated to reach 630 hours in the school year. Eligibility for retirement based on 3.50 hrs/day or more for 5 or more consecutive months. Optional tax-sheltered annuities: Omni 403(b) and Deferred Compensation Plan. Personal leave, vacation leave (260-day employees only), and sick leave prorated based on FTE. Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
  • At a minimum, a High School diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Fluency in English and at least one other language.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in consecutive and/or simultaneous interpretation.
  • Experience working with individuals and families with limited English proficiency.
  • Experience as an interpreter in an educational, healthcare, or community setting.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics for interpreters.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Diplomas or degrees earned outside the U.S. must be evaluated by an international credentials evaluation agency.
  • Experience as an interpreter in an educational, healthcare, or community setting.
  • Must pass a proficiency test upon hire (national/state interpreter certification OR a valid Teacher certification as a World Language or Bilingual teacher OR Seal of Biliteracy from a U.S. high school may substitute for the proficiency test).
  • Proficiency in English and at least one other language.
  • Strong listening, speaking, and comprehension skills in both languages.
  • Knowledge of specialized terminology related to education and student services.
  • Ability to adapt interpretation style based on audience needs.
  • Basic math skills required for understanding time summaries, schedules, and minor calculations.
  • Ability to remain impartial and interpret with accuracy in emotionally charged situations.
  • Ability to assess communication barriers and facilitate effective understanding between parties.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to different environments and topics.
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage assignments efficiently.
  • Technological proficiency, including basic knowledge of email, video conferencing tools, and office software.
  • Punctuality and reliability for scheduled assignments.
  • Ability to work evenings or weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and impartial interpretation services between English and the target language in meetings, parent-teacher conferences, special education settings (IEPs), and other school-related meetings or events.
  • Facilitate communication between families and school personnel to support student success.
  • Sight-translate simple written documents such as school notices, short letters, and meeting agendas when needed.
  • Provide translation of school records, flyers, communications, medical records and other types of written documents from English into the target language and vice-versa.
  • Proofreads written documents to ensure accuracy.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, refraining from interjecting personal opinions or engaging in side conversations.
  • Abide by all district policies, confidentiality agreements (e.g., FERPA, HIPAA), and interpreter ethics.
  • Attend required training and professional development sessions.
  • Notify the school district of availability and report any schedule conflicts promptly.
  • Other duties as assigned.
