About The Position

The Substance Use Group Counselor to facilitate group therapy sessions for individuals struggling with substance use disorders. The counselor will provide education, support, and guidance to help clients develop coping strategies and work toward recovery. This role involves working closely with clients, families, and multidisciplinary teams to promote a supportive and structured treatment environment.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of addiction treatment models, relapse prevention strategies, and mental health disorders.
  • Ability to create a positive, inclusive, and structured group environment.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and documentation requirements.
  • HS Diploma required.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in substance abuse counseling or group facilitation preferred
  • Schedule may include evenings or weekends to accommodate client needs.
  • Ability to handle emotionally charged situations with professionalism and empathy.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors or Associates and/or related experience preferred.
  • CASAC or CASAC-T preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate group counseling sessions focused on addiction recovery, relapse prevention, coping skills, and mental health.
  • Monitors client interaction and behaviors. Provides a role model for the program participants.
  • Writes group and individual progress notes to document their interactions and services completed.
  • Responsible for contributing to the upkeep and cleanliness of the residence.
  • Completes all required documentation, in timelines in accordance with program standards.
  • Provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment for clients to share and grow.
  • Educate clients about substance use disorders, mental health, and healthy coping mechanisms.
  • Monitor clients’ progress, behavior, and engagement in group therapy.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of client progress and participation.
  • Recognize and respond to crisis situations appropriately, including referrals for higher levels of care if necessary.
  • Stay updated on best practices in substance abuse treatment and incorporate new methods into counseling sessions.
  • Completes all required documentation, in timelines in accordance with program standards
