About The Position

The Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor provides culturally sensitive, trauma-informed substance use counseling, case management, and recovery support services to patients receiving care at Mathiesen Memorial Health Clinic. This position plays a key role in supporting holistic wellness, integrating behavioral health, medical, and community resources to promote recovery for individuals and families. The SUD Counselor adheres to federal and tribal regulations, including confidentiality requirements under 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA.

Requirements

  • Certification or registration as a Substance Use Disorder counselor (e.g., CADC-I, CADC-II, SUDCC, or equivalent) required.
  • Knowledge of ASAM criteria, evidence-based SUD treatment models, and trauma-informed care.
  • Ability to work respectfully within tribal communities, honoring cultural values, traditions, and historical context.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality under 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA.
  • Current BLS certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire).
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for training, outreach, or patient support as needed.
  • Must successfully pass criminal background check and preemployment drug screening
  • Commitment to upholding patient dignity, cultural humility, and community wellness.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience providing counseling in an outpatient, tribal, or community healthcare setting preferred.
  • Familiarity with motivational interviewing (MI), CBT, DBT skills, harm reduction, and recovery-oriented systems of care, preferred.
  • Experience with co-occurring mental health disorders.
  • Knowledge of local and regional substance use treatment resources.
  • Familiarity with medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and coordination of care with MAT prescribers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling using evidence-based and culturally aligned modalities.
  • Conduct intake assessments, biopsychosocial evaluations, ASAM criteria evaluations, and treatment planning.
  • Develop, review, and update individualized treatment plans with measurable goals.
  • Provide crisis intervention, safety planning, and referral to higher levels of care when necessary.
  • Collaborate with medical providers, behavioral health clinicians, case managers, and cultural practitioners to support integrated care.
  • Coordinate referrals to detox, residential treatment, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and community recovery resources.
  • Maintain compliant clinical documentation in the EHR, following 42 CFR Part 2, HIPAA, and clinic standards.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, case consultations, and care conferences.
  • Support culturally relevant healing practices and community activities when appropriate.
  • Educate patients and families on addiction, harm reduction, overdose prevention, and recovery strategies.
  • Track patient progress, manage caseload effectively, and maintain required reporting or billing documentation.
  • Maintain professional licensure/certification and participate in continuing education.
  • Follows and adheres to the Employee Handbook, as well as MMHC policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
