About The Position

Join the New Student Initiatives team as an Orientation Team Leader (OTL) and gain hands-on experience in leadership, program management, and student engagement during the Spring and Summer semesters. You’ll assist with the planning, development, and execution of orientation programs that help incoming students transition to campus life. This includes leading training sessions, mentoring a team of Orientation Leaders, and creating engaging activities to enhance student success and retention. You will also attend leadership training sessions during the Spring semester, are eligible to attend the NODA Region II conference for professional development, and play a key role in planning Welcome Weekend and other student events. This opportunity is perfect for students looking to build leadership skills, collaborate.

Requirements

  • Must have completed one summer as an orientation leader to be considered.
  • Students are allowed to enroll in one summer class during first OR second session not both sessions or the mini-session. Asynchronous, on-line courses are also allowed.
  • 2.75 Cumulative GPA
  • Unable to be a NevadaFit Mentor due to welcome weekend planning and preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Orientation Interns report to the Assistant Director and Program Coordinator, New Student Initiatives.
  • Required to attend 7 leadership and training sessions during the Spring Semester.
  • Required to attend a 2-3-day Orientation Leader Training retreat before the Orientation Leader training program begins.
  • Invited to attend the NODA conference for professional development from Friday, February 20 – Sunday, February 22 in Irvine, CA.
  • Assist the Assistant Director and Program Coordinator, New Student Initiatives in the development of one of the following orientation program trainings – social media, logistics, family engagement, and student engagement. (will lead the training on these subjects during the orientation leader training)
  • Create additional training materials and present them during the Orientation Leader training. These items will focus on the mission and values of UNR’s student services division, as well as additional content to help train and develop orientation leaders. Sessions include but not limited to the Welcome Session, Closing Session, DEI, Leadership Development, Small Group Development, Tours, and Campus Traditions.
  • Assist with the Orientation Leader interviews during the Spring Semester.
  • Manage 6 – 7 orientation leaders (team) throughout the summer.
  • Oversee their teams’ small group sessions and conduct “pop ins” during the summer to assess the development of their sessions.
  • Conduct 1:1 and team check-ins throughout the summer.
  • Assist NSI staff with summer staff scheduling as needed.
  • Will be staffed as floaters/leads during the orientation days and will fill in gaps where necessary.
  • Assign daily energizers and warm-ups during the summer.
  • At the direction of NSI Staff, assist with the planning of August Welcome Weekend, Tabling and Welcome Back Events.
