What is Federal Work Study? The Federal Work Study Program (FWS) provides part-time employment to Capella learners with financial need. Financial need is based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) provided by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The award amount depends on the learner’s financial need and is based on expected weekly employment targets. Unlike federal grants, funds from the Federal Work Study are paid to the learner on a bi-weekly basis after employment requirements have been met and wages have been earned. The inclusion of Federal Work Study in a financial aid award is not a guarantee of the amount learners will earn as they will be paid only for the hours that are worked. All federal aid sources must be included in a learner’s financial aid, including the Federal Work Study Program. With this additional federal aid source, it may reduce the amount of federal loans for which a learner is eligible. Federal loans must be paid back (with interest) whereas the Federal Work Study Program funds are provided bi-weekly and do not require repayment. ATTENTION: This requisition is only applicable to those currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral program. The Federal Work-Study Community Service Program allows learners to engage in individual community service projects/employment while being part of the Federal Work-Study Program. Applicants MUST submit a FWS Community Service Questionnaire prior to completing an application. Applications submitted without a completed questionnaire will not be considered. To be considered as a Community Service Organization for federal work-study (i.e., a 501(c)(3) U.S. nonreligious affiliated, nonprofit organization), the Organization must provide services designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals. No organization may discriminate on the basis of income or charge fees for services without provisions for those less able to pay. The actual work performed by the FWS learners must involve services such as: Trains or educates the public about evacuation, emergency response, and injury prevention strategies relating to natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other emergency situations; Fields such as healthcare, childcare, literacy training, education (including tutorial services), welfare, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, community improvement, and emergency preparedness and response; Federal, State, local, or Tribal civic engagement work that is not associated with a particular interest or group, such as supporting broad-based get-out-the-vote activities, voter registration, providing voter assistance at a polling place or through a voter hotline, or serving as a poll worker; Work in service opportunities or youth corps under AmeriCorps, and service in the agencies, institutions, and activities described later; Supports services for students with disabilities (including students with disabilities who are enrolled at the institution of higher education); Activities as mentors for such purposes as tutoring, supporting educational and recreational activities, and counseling, including career counseling; A reading tutor for preschool-age through elementary school-age children; A mathematics tutor for children in elementary school through ninth grade; or Performing family literacy activities in a family literacy project that provides services to families with preschool-age children or children who are in elementary school. Applicants will need to work directly with the organizations to secure the desired position. The position will not be considered community service if a client's eligibility for services is dependent upon income, or if a fee is charged for services without allowances for those less able to pay.
