About The Position

Through both training and direct field ministry experience, the Student Staff learns how to participate in effective Young Life ministry. This role encompasses five key ministry functions: Spiritual Development, Leadership Development, Resource Development, Direct Ministry, and Ministry Support. Spiritual Development involves fostering a vibrant spiritual life through prayer, spiritual disciplines, fellowship, growth, health, and church relationships, and leading others in spiritual development. Leadership Development focuses on equipping leaders, committee, and staff through volunteer care, recruiting, team building, training, supervision, and vision casting. Resource Development includes fueling the ministry through events, major donor care, public relations, and the TDS team, as well as raising financial support. Direct Ministry involves proclaiming and modeling the gospel through active contact work, leading Young Life club and Campaigners/discipleship ministry, and implementing summer and school-season camping strategies. Ministry Support covers administrative tasks such as accounting, internal communication, data management, strategic planning, adherence to policies, and managing office hours and expenses.

Requirements

  • Sign a Statement of Faith.
  • Profess a belief in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord.
  • Subscribe to the statements and policies required of all Young Life staff, including the Young Life Statement of Faith.
  • During working and nonworking hours, shall: (i) be ready, willing and able to fulfill such ministry functions as may be required by the organization; (ii) refrain from conduct and statements that detract from the biblical standards taught and supported by Young Life, and (iii) abide by all policies and practices of Young Life including, without limitation, those related to religious belief or ministry activities.
  • Pursuing a college degree.
  • Proven relational skills with both kids and adults.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in volunteer leadership development, fundraising, and general area operations.
  • Work with the area director and staff to complete initiatives on a weekly basis.
  • Continue being a great volunteer leader.
  • Develop a yearly personal growth plan that fosters a vibrant spiritual life, including time for solitude, retreat, reflection, prayer, and a sincere commitment to understanding God’s Word.
  • Seek and maintain relationships and disciplines within an active church community.
  • Actively participate in the spiritual life of the Young Life community.
  • Lead teams and individuals in spiritual development.
  • Meet with volunteer leaders and area leadership on a regular basis.
  • Learn to recruit and train new leaders to build a leadership team that reflects the community.
  • Model excellence in contact work, club, Campaigners, and camping to other leaders.
  • Attend and be involved with area leadership as assigned.
  • Raise financial support as directed and maintain good donor care practices.
  • Communicate ministry updates and progress to personal donor partners.
  • Assist with camp fundraisers and attend occasional committee and adult functions as assigned.
  • Actively engage in all three levels of contact work.
  • Participate in leadership with a team to conduct a Young Life club and Campaigners/discipleship ministry with excellence.
  • Participate on a team to implement a summer and school-season camping strategy for a ministry.
  • Potentially serve on summer staff or assigned staff at a Young Life property with input and direction from the area director.
  • Adhere to all Young Life policies and procedures and maintain professionalism concerning office hours, dress, conduct, and time management.
  • Learn to set yearly ministry and personal goals and objectives and review them regularly.
  • Assist in office administration when necessary and assigned.
  • Complete expense reports in a clear and timely fashion.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and congruent with gifts, experience, and area needs.
  • Work through job assignments under the supervision of the area director or assigned mentor.
  • Receive individualized training supervised by the area director designed to develop personal spiritual maturity and enhance personal character.
  • Give particular focus to an individualized program to learn and gain competency in ministry skills (i.e., The 5 C’s).
  • Become familiar with area strategy and ministry health as assigned by the area director.
  • Receive introduction to personal fund-raising principles, including familiarity with Basic Elements for Part-Time Staff.
  • Take advantage of Young Life discipleship experiences (e.g., summer staff, discipleship focus, adventure camping).
