About The Position

This position provides academic, admissions, career, financial aid, and transfer advising services to prospective and current students at Minnesota West Community & Technical College to assist them in continuing their college progression.

Requirements

  • One year of professional experience which supports academic, financial, or career advising, student or academic affairs or adult developmental education. A bachelor’s degree may substitute for 1 year of experience, an associate’s degree may substitute for 6 months experience.
  • Human relations/customer service skills sufficient to actively listen to and understand students’ needs and provide accurate information and identify applicable resources.
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse and traditionally underserved backgrounds with varied needs.
  • Experience working with computer software applications and systems to be able to sufficiently enter data and create basic business correspondence, documents and training presentations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, in individual and group settings via phone, virtual meetings or in-person.
  • Experience multitasking with strong organizational skills, prioritization skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working independently while contributing to a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Knowledgeable about Minnesota West C&TC academic programs, curriculum, student services, resources, policies and procedures.
  • One or more years of experience in advising, admissions, or registration within a Minnesota State College or University.
  • Multilingual proficiency (spoken and written).
  • Knowledge of community resources sufficient to locate resources to address students’ needs, including counseling, housing, food, etc. services.
  • Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with peers at other higher educational institutions sufficient to secure knowledge of applicable transfer issues and degree articulation agreements.

Responsibilities

  • All employees on a daily basis are expected to execute a service commitment to ensure all students are served and have a positive experience.
  • Provide advising and coaching services through the appreciative advising model to new, current, returning, and PSEO students to ensure students are served holistically, in partnership with faculty, athletic coaches and directors, and other college departments. Advise students on appropriate course selection, troubleshoot issues, and overcome achievement barriers. Track and report on advisees’ academic progress, identify at-risk students and develop and implement academic recovery plans and retention strategies to ensure student retention and successful completion of their academic programs. Support students with academic progress concerns, warning, probation, and suspensions. Guide students to college-wide services and community resources for career exploration and personal support. Provide coaching and support to help students develop effective learning strategies, time management skills, and goal setting techniques. Interpret and translate Minnesota West Community & Technical College, Minnesota State and Federal policies and guidelines into advising procedures and services. Serve as an organizational liaison for assigned academic programs and student populations. Continuously develop coaching skills and utilize coaching techniques to empower students and promote their success. Participate in professional development activities and maintain membership in relevant organizations.
  • Plan, organize, and implement activities related to course placement, academic/career advising, retention, financial aid, and transfer. Interpret multiple measures for course placement and provide resources and referrals. Identify career and educational options for maximizing student achievement and goal attainment. Utilize Advising technology tools to proactively communicate with students and track progress. Recognize relevant resources and success skills for students on varied paths on their educational journey. Plan and implement enrollment and retention activities and facilitate orientations, advising and registration sessions. Advise students on course selection and student planner interpretation. Provide accurate information on admissions, registration, and progress towards graduation and transfer.
  • Serve as collegewide liaison for International Students. Advise International Student applicants of admissions requirements. Track student compliance with requirements to remain a student. Serve as the Designated School Official (DSO), interpret and apply rules of admission of international students in the SEVIS system. Participate in system wide meetings and trainings to keep up to date of any changes relating to the admissions process and eligibility.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which may include committee or special projects work and ongoing professional development, to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the college as a viable business partner.
