About The Position

The Student Nurse Technician, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), is responsible for providing high-quality, cost-effective care to patients. This role involves performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services, common nursing functions, and activities of daily living, with duties tailored based on the student's completed academic semesters. Key activities include monitoring vital signs, collecting specimens, hourly patient rounding, participating in Bedside Shift Report, assisting with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, performing Medication Reconciliation, and educating patients on their care plan, disease process, medications, and discharge instructions. The Student Nurse Technician may also perform certain validated clinical procedures under the direct supervision of an RN.

Requirements

  • Completed one semester of clinicals.
  • Enrolled in an accredited nursing program at the Associate or Bachelor level.
  • Experience with nursing fundamentals in lab and/or clinical setting as evidenced by completed nursing fundamentals skill check-off.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required (Proof of higher education to be accepted for this requirement).
  • Requires critical thinking skills.
  • Requires decisive judgment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year of experience as a nurse assistant, clinical services technician or other clinical position in a hospital setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality cost-effective care to an individual or group of patients under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Perform a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living, tailored based on completed semesters in their academic program.
  • Take and record vital signs.
  • Collect and transport specimens.
  • Perform hourly patient rounding.
  • Participate in Bedside Shift Report.
  • Assist in the admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
  • Perform Medication Reconciliation.
  • Educate patients on their plan of care, disease process, medications, and discharge instructions.
  • Perform certain procedures validated in their clinical program under the direct supervision of an RN.
  • Perform basic patient care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, daily weights, and recording input/output measures.
  • Record all data timely and accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Provide ongoing assessments to determine the nursing care requirements using the nursing process, including physical, psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of the past and present state of health.
  • Provide information of changes in patient's condition to the supervising Registered Nurse in a timely manner.
  • Develop and utilize prioritizing and decision-making skills in planning and provision of patient care.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding the hospitalization course, medication education, discharge instructions, and gathering data for the medication reconciliation.
  • Provide documentation of the nursing process.
  • Answer call lights, perform hourly rounding, and attend to/report patients needs to the Registered Nurse.
  • Perform designated sterile and aseptic procedures using proper technique (i.e., venipuncture and phlebotomy, IV insertions, and foley insertions) under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Assist with obtaining histories for admissions, transfers, and discharges under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Maintain appropriate safety precautions for patients (e.g., car seats, use of restraints, initiation of fall protocol, etc.) and document interventions.
  • Provide for safe transport of patients through institution.
  • Escort patients into and out of the hospital.
  • Adhere to Infection Control Policy and OSHA Standards related to Standard Precautions.
  • Report faulty and/or dangerous equipment.
  • Initiate appropriate communication documents (clinical or maintenance requests) in required reporting systems.
  • Assist the care team during emergency situations; May perform chest compressions, maintain crowd control, or be used as a runner to gather equipment during a patient code.
  • Assist with keeping patient rooms stocked with supplies.
