Hours vary and may include day and night shifts, weekends and holidays during the Externship. You will be expected to work the shifts that your preceptors(s) are scheduled. You will recieve your schedule about 2 weeks prior to starting the externship. Orientation on Day 1 (5/18/2026) is mandatory. Eligibility Factors: Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Graduation date of Fall 2026, Spring 2027, or Summer 2027 Cumulative GPA of 2.8 Valid CPR/BLS Certification throughout program participation dates Completion of application packet within deadline requirements (Recent Transcript and Resume) Additional details will be provided after Externship application is submitted. All application materials should be submitted together, in one email. Overview Role Purpose Provides direct patient care under the direct supervision of a RN. Assists with developing, implementing, and evaluating plan of care. BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes nursing process to plan, direct and provide safe nursing care working under the supervision of assigned mentor.
  • Develops a collaborative plan of care based on patient assessment.
  • Interprets data and implements appropriate interventions along side a nurse preceptor.
  • Follows specific standards of care and policies relative to area assigned.
  • Identifies patient and family education needs and works with mentor to coordinate appropriate educational resources.
  • Participates in educational activities related to extern program including unit specific educational information.
  • Performs Other Responsibilities as Assigned
