Our externship is available May 11-July 16 and June 1-August 6. This is available at the following locations: Akron General, Main Campus, and Fairview Hospital. We ONLY have openings in med/surg specialties. The Nurse Associate Externship (NAE) is a paid, 10-week program for nursing students graduating in Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 to work one-on-one with RNs in our system of hospitals as well as learn from Cleveland Clinic nurse educators and fellow externs in a classroom setting. The Externship is offered in our Acute Program (inpatient areas). Under the supervision of an RN performs basic patient care activities. Assists with skills specifically identified on skills checklists for which training and competency has been established. These may include but not limited to vital signs, weights, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living and patient transfers/transport. Ten week program and candidate would need to attend required classes. Eligible for PCNA role as well as RN Resident at completion of program.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an accredited BSN Nursing school with less than one year until graduating.
  • Or Enrolled in an accredited ADN nursing school with less than two classes until graduating.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • None required.
  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patients with tending to personal care, activities of daily living and transfers/transport.
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to RN.
  • Assists with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly.
  • Maintains personal growth and development through the ongoing process of formal and informal education.
  • Demonstrates a positive, concerned and sensitive response in the workplace.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English and to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact with patients and staff.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics.
  • If concurrently enrolled in a perspective school course, will be able to perform advanced skills including medication administration and IV therapy under the direction of a preceptor.
  • The contracted school will have a designated faculty that will participate in the evaluation of the student (NAE) in conjunction with course objectives and clinical requirements.
