About The Position

The Student Assistant will support the on the department of Biostatistics Epidemiology Environmental Health Sciences as a Lab Assistant on the Statesboro Campus beginning Spring 2026. The student will participate in laboratory experiments involving germination of molds (spores of filamentous fungi), which were previously found to be the most abundant within cultural heritage collections, on selected museum collection materials at different temperature and relative humidity conditions. Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period. Employment is contingent upon funding.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining relative humidity and closely monitoring environmental conditions within incubation chambers
  • Observing fungal growth using microscopes or other methods and preparing slides
  • Organizing experimental data in spreadsheets
  • Helping out with any necessary laboratory work
  • Ensuring cleanliness and order of all equipment in the laboratory
  • Assisting Graduate Assistants and other researchers
  • Maintaining a safe and clean work environment
  • Presents the collected data at the GSU Research Symposium or other conferences
