About The Position

The Student Assistant will support the History Department as a Research Assistant on the Statesboro Campus beginning Spring 2026. Drs. Drew Swanson (Georgia Southern University) and Debra Reid (The Henry Ford) seek a student research assistant for a book project entitled Encounters: The History of Rural American in 50 Objects, under contract to Routledge Press. Using fifty objects common to the rural historical experience, this book will help readers visualize the fabric of past rural American life. Like other titles in Routledge¿s new Encounters series, this book makes the past accessible through everyday objects, telling important stories of people rooted in the objects they used. In consultation with the authors, the student assistant will be responsible for researching images for use in the book, determining their copyright status, and arranging for publication permissions. Training in this work will be provided as part of the position. This work will provide the assistant with valuable experience in historical team research, digital art and permissions, and academic publishing. Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.
  • Consistently exhibit engaging customer service
  • Ability to support various constituencies served by the University
  • Proven proficiency with computers including Microsoft Office, Google, and/or applications as required for specific position
  • Adhere to University policies and procedures to meet Institutional goals and support University's mission for student success
  • Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relations skills

Nice To Haves

  • Current undergraduate at Georgia Southern University, with a preference for a declared major in history or a related field (anthropology, archeology, geography, etc.).
  • Familiarity with online research, Excel spreadsheets, and manipulation of image files.
  • A basic understanding of US history is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Review, research, and identify historical images suitable for publication, in consultation with the authors
  • Assess the copyright status of these images
  • Complete and submit permissions paperwork for images
  • Provides weekly research updates to the faculty supervisor
