About The Position

This student assistant will support the research project entitled "Women's Place is in the Statehouse: The Politics of Presence in Discourse before and after Dobbs," funded by an Academic Affairs Small Grant from the GCSU Provost's office. The student assistant will work closely with the principal investigator and collaborators to process and organize data for further analysis. The position requires approximately 10 hours per week, beginning in December 2025 or January 2026, and will conclude no later than May 2026 based on budgeted hours.

Requirements

  • Must be a current GCSU student.
  • Strong interest in and familiarity with conducting research
  • Logical thinking and understanding of what a quantitative dataset looks like
  • Organized, self-sufficient, honest about any difficulties encountered, and willing to ask questions when help is needed
  • Enthusiastic about the subject of the research project, specifically gendered political behavior and abortion debates
  • Quick learner and comfortable iterating on a project with the research team as well as with ChatGPT

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with a coding language (ideally R, but open to others if the student is fairly proficient) that will enable the quick processing of large amounts of data, instead of using manual processes
  • Familiarity with Github and/or other collaborative software for managing datasets
  • Familiarity with research and other work using text-as-data approaches to study gender in politics as well as abortion policy

Responsibilities

  • Transcription - 50% Using ChatGPT to recognize the text in historical legislative transcripts (OCR) and save it as plain text.
  • Data Organization - 45% Organize the text data into dataframes (spreadsheets) of a format that is suitable for further analysis.
  • Data Analysis - 5% Begin text-as-data analysis, subject to available budget hours
