About The Position

This is a semi-skilled and/or skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, sign installation and fabrication. May have limited responsibility for: the preparation of reports and records; daily contact with the public requiring tact, diplomacy and professionalism; may make numerous work decisions weekly, varying in complexity; may have limited supervisory assignments; reports Streets Maintenance crew activity daily. This position may be filled as a Worker Trainee, Worker I or II and may perform as a leader of a crew or crews.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
Must have a valid “B” Texas Commercial driver’s license or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.

Responsibilities

Grounds Keeping:
Operates and maintains grounds keeping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and chippers to maintain City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, signage and other assigned areas.
Operates and maintains City trucks and trailers
Excavates and back-fills trenches and other areas with hand tools
Earth Moving Equipment:
Operates earth moving equipment such as dump trucks, trailers, backhoes and loaders to maintain and repair City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, alleys, right of ways, signage and other assigned areas.
Material Handling:
Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, loaders, trucks, dump trucks and trailers.
Loads and unloads construction materials, bench stock supplies and others as assigned.
Specialty Equipment:
Operates specialty equipment such as street sweepers, crack sealers, rollers, asphalt patch trucks, paint stripers and asphalt zippers.
Safety & Operations:
Follows procedures for safe and effective work zone and traffic control when required.
Follows procedures for safe handling and application of pesticides and other hazardous chemicals.
Works cooperatively with Sign Technicians maintaining, fabricating and installing new signs.
Follows procedures for lock-out-tag-out of equipment.
Other Duties & Responsibilities:
Operates power tools and light construction equipment.
Performs rough carpentry, painting, and concrete work.
Performs scheduled vehicle and equipment inspections and records maintenance actions on proper forms.
Records traffic control device maintenance actions on proper forms.
Records work performed and man-hour expenditures on work orders.
Assists other Public Work Divisions/City Departments when requested.
Participates in on-call schedules and duties.
On-call duties during City-wide events, extenuating circumstances and emergencies (weather related or other) may be extended to all Public Works personnel.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
