About The Position

ESP Associates, Inc. is requesting applications for a Summer 2026 Stormwater Design Engineering Intern, located in our Morrisville, NC office. Projects will include stormwater management, stormwater detention and facilities (e.g., SCM, BMP, GI, LID), planning studies, funding applications, stream improvements, erosion and sediment control, and water quality studies through planning, designing, O&M development, regulatory compliance and permitting. The Stormwater Design Engineering Intern will have the opportunity to: Prepare H&H models in both 1D and 2D, water quality modeling/assessments, geospatial evaluations, design plans (e.g., Municipal, DOT designs), specifications, and cost estimates in support of civil, drainage, stormwater projects, watershed studies, stormwater masterplans, FEMA flood studies, flood resiliency projects, and capital improvement projects, in addition to the other items. Prepare construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil3D in support of municipal and environmental projects. This would include generating design files, plan sheets, and standard detail drawings. The intern will also have the opportunity to learn through revising existing drawings and following design instruction from supervisor and coworkers. Analyze system flows for drainage, surface waters, flood risk, and mitigation alternatives. Perform calculations and make recommendations on concerns regarding erosion, drainage, flooding, etc. Participate in the project decision process regarding technical approaches, feasibility, cost, construction approaches, and scheduling performance. Perform designs, inspections, and technical review/assessments of storm sewer line replacement and extension, and stormwater facility conversions and retrofits, bridge scour, studies/modeling, SCMs, land development plans and specs. Perform designs, inspections, and technical review/assessments of utility realignments where overlaps occur with stormwater or flood mitigation projects. Address local, state, and federal flood management regulations such as providing MS4 and other regulatory compliance, permit support and coordination with multiple agencies. Prepares and reviews easement, encroachment, and permit documents. Assist in preparation of bid documents and manages the bid process for rehabilitation and capital projects as assigned. Assist in preparation of Municipal UDO language, permit creation and standard specification documents as assigned. Participate in field work, site visits, and data collection in a variety of areas and weather conditions.

Requirements

  • Enrollment in an undergraduate Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related engineering program
  • Completion of an AutoCAD Civil3DE course, or course requiring project assignments in that program.
  • Proficiency in basic Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.
  • Positive attitude and eagerness to learn is essential.
  • Candidate must be able to pass a drug screen, background check, and have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the company’s driving (MVR) policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or coursework in water resources related work in systems, design, rules and regulations related to stormwater and flood mitigation.
  • Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D and ESRI ArcGIS.
  • Experience in performing surface water analysis using ICM, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS (1-D and 2-D).
