About The Position

CVP is seeking Sterile Processing Technicians to join our team in providing critical sterile processing support to our Nation's Veterans at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, TX. This position supports minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures and reprocessing of MIS-related instrumentation for the Main Operating Room, Urology Clinic, ENT Clinic, Speech Pathology, Anesthesia, Cardiology Cath Lab, Pulmonary Bronch Lab, and the Sterile Processing Services Department.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible to obtain a Public Trust government security clearance (US Citizenship is required)
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience required in sterile processing (Surgical Technician experience may be substituted)
  • Ability to perform decontamination, assembly, case cart preparation, and sterile storage maintenance duties independently
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, surgical procedures, and the reprocessing of Reusable Medical Equipment (RME)
  • Demonstrated ability to operate instrumentation tracking systems, washer-disinfectors, ultrasonics, cart washers, and various sterilizers (steam, Sterrad, V Pro Max)
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English without the use of an interpreter
  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Must successfully complete the Level 1 VA SPS Certification within the first 90 days of hire date
  • Must receive in-service training from all applicable MIS vendors on proper care and handling, reprocessing and preventative maintenance per IFU
  • Current Tuberculosis (TB) testing required
  • Physically capable of standing for long periods of extended time, lifting and/or transferring up to 25 lbs, and exposure to chemicals used in cleaning and sterilization work areas

  • Health Care Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Certification preferred
  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CPSPD) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, wash, and organize surgical instruments and equipment per manufacturer's instructions and established procedures
  • Wear appropriate PPE (scrubs, bouffant, jacket, facial hair covering, apron, gloves) during all decontamination processes
  • Receive, inventory, and process loaner instruments promptly upon arrival
  • Assemble and package instrument trays, individual instruments, and supplies per count sheets and AAMI standards for all surgical services (General, Orthopedics, Cardiovascular, Cardiothoracic, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Urology, Otolaryngology, Plastic, Oral/Dental)
  • Perform quality assurance second checks on assembled trays
  • Prepare case carts for scheduled, add-on, and emergency OR cases
  • Locate missing items and communicate inventory needs with SPS department and OR staff
  • Operate instrumentation tracking systems, washer-disinfectors, ultrasonics, cart washers, steam sterilizers, Sterrad, and V Pro Max sterilizers
  • Reprocess endoscopic equipment per manufacturer instructions and MEDVAMC SOPs
  • Maintain Cidex, AER, and cleaning logbooks
  • Perform preventive maintenance during assembly per OEM instructions
  • Provide intra-operative technical support for video/equipment troubleshooting
  • Restock work areas daily and maintain cleanliness/organization of decontamination and sterile storage areas
  • Manage inventory, perform pick-up/delivery operations, and report damaged equipment or low stock
  • Lift up to 25 lbs and stand for extended periods
  • Complete TMS modules timely and support continuous quality improvement
  • Follow infection control, safety, and OSHA regulations; report malfunctions, injuries, or safety issues immediately
  • Answer phones professionally, identifying department and self
