The High-Pressure Boiler Operator is responsible for the operation and preventative maintenance of the stationary boilers and the associated mechanical equipment. Ability to fire boilers and associated controls to assure the generation of a continuous supply of steam for heating Hospital buildings, sterilizing equipment, humidification and re heat application. Performs duties of a maintenance mechanic as needed. Other tasks as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor and or Director. This position plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health’s mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Licensure/Certification: Underground Storage Tank Operator Training Class B Operator designation recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia within 60 days of hire.
  • Experience: Three to five years’ experience working as a Boiler plant operator, attendant or equivalent role
  • Driver's License: Yes
  • To drive an Augusta Health Vehicle, must also be 21 years old and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be approved by Risk Management.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States and meet Virginia state employment requirements

Responsibilities

  • Operates boilers and associated equipment safely and efficiently to generate steam.
  • Ability to start and shut down High-Pressure Boilers routinely for maintenance and after utility interruptions.
  • Inspects, cleans, lubricates, paints and repairs all mechanical equipment such as motors, fans, pumps, valves, compressors, converters, controls and boilers.
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks as assigned through computerized maintenance program, completes task as outlined, enters clear/detailed results and accounts for time utilizing personal dashboards of maintenance program.
  • Makes chemical analysis or test of condensate water and adjust proper dosage to maintain efficient operations of the steam system and enters in log.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain and repair of water treatment systems.
  • Makes test of flu-gasses and temperature to indicate proper combustion and enters in log.
  • Tests and regenerates water softeners that supply water to all areas of the hospital complex and enter in log.
  • Works various scheduled / un-scheduled shifts when needed to maintain 24/7/365 coverage of the Powerhouse; including Nights, Weekends, and Holidays
  • Ability to instruct/teach others in a positive way on the various powerhouse and hospital campus boiler, steam, condensate, and water treatment systems.
  • Maintains boiler room in a clean, well painted, well lighted, safe and secure condition.
  • Assists other trades in maintaining the cleanliness of the Boiler room; including removal of trash, replacing lamps, cleaning all floors, stairwells and equipment spaces.
  • Maintaining clear emergency exits, isle ways and required clearance of electrical and operating equipment.
  • Ability to research, plan, coordinate and/or aid in scheduled and unscheduled steam, condensate, natural gas, fuel oil, and other system outages necessary for maintenance or repairs.
  • Follows all Hospital and Maintenance Department Policies and Procedures
  • Follows all Departmental Safety Procedures.
  • Maintains all Assigned Safety Equipment in good working condition and always available for use when needed.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders, metal platforms, scaffolds, platform and aerial lift equipment.
  • Basic understanding of hospital Emergency Generator system including Generators, monitoring system, transfer switches and fuel oil supply.
  • Basic understanding of Hospital Chilled Water system including chillers, chilled water pump, cooling towers etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
