About The Position

About us: Power California is a multi-racial, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a sibling 501(c)(4) organization, made up of on-the-ground community partners in urban, suburban and rural communities throughout the state. We are proudly one of the only statewide organizations dedicated to building the electoral power of young voters of color. Our mission is to harness the energy of young people of color to create a state that is fair, inclusive and just for everyone who calls California home. We elevate the voices of youth and young adults in our democracy and build their power to participate and lead in systems of government at all levels. Summary: The Statewide Membership Manager drives the growth, health, and mobilization of Power California’s statewide member base. Reporting to the Organizing and Membership Director, this role spearheads outreach and member mobilization for our virtual at large base and priority areas where we do not have an office or organizer for both Power California (501c3) and PowerCA Action (501c4).

Requirements

  • 3-4 years base-building and recruitment experience in BIPOC youth/community organizing and/or social justice/non-profit organizations
  • 2 year experience working with youth through mission development programs or a mentorship role
  • A deep understanding of the "Relational Model"—the ability to build power through trust and personal networks rather than just transactional lists.
  • Highly organized and strongly motivated to do community organizing
  • Exceptional communication skills and strategies that have successfully mobilized youth
  • Demonstrated success in training and preparing youth in speaking/presentation skills
  • Excellent time management and organization for self and others; works well both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with shifting timelines
  • Experience working/partnering with young people of color, low-income, immigrants and refugees and/or LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Strong computer literacy, including experience in Microsoft suite and Google Docs
  • Ability to consistently act and interact with integrity, compassion and openness to feedback
  • Works well independently and in collaboration with others
  • Excellent ability to communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds
  • 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4), grass roots, lobbying experience
  • Some evenings and weekends required, primarily during campaign seasons
  • Has cell phone with adequate data plan and home internet connection with adequate speed

Responsibilities

  • Base Building & Retention: Lead year-round recruitment and retention strategies, serving as the primary entry point for young people to engage in organizing.
  • Strategic Mobilization: Partner with the Organizing Director to utilize digital tools for large-scale mobilization, moving members to take action on key issues and campaigns.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Cultivate relationships with campuses, youth-centered organizations, and current members to scale volunteer recruitment and advocacy efforts.
  • Program Management: Facilitate monthly membership meetings and statewide events while maintaining accurate data and outreach materials.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Coordinate with internal teams to provide members with the resources, leadership training, and opportunities needed to champion key issues across multiple campaigns.
  • Pipeline Development: Create and manage "ladders of engagement" that transition digital supporters (petition signers, social media followers) into active grassroots leaders.
  • Base Building: Execute annual base-building drives and implement a statewide volunteer mobilization strategy in coordination with the Organizing Director.
  • Event Leadership: Design and lead engaging, "culture-forward" statewide campaign events that integrate members into field, policy, and advocacy work.
  • Strategic Communication: Collaborate with the Narrative and Communications team to ensure members receive timely updates and clear calls to action.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Work with Field, Policy, and Campaign teams to identify and vet high-impact leadership opportunities for member volunteers.
  • Member Education: Lead monthly statewide meetings and facilitate training sessions to ensure volunteers are equipped for specific campaign activations.
  • Data Management: Oversee the maintenance and segmentation of volunteer lists to ensure precise and effective outreach.
  • Recruitment Strategy: Plan and implement recruitment initiatives to bring young members into both Power California and PowerCA Action, driving attendance for digital and in-person events.
  • Logistics & Facilitation: Manage the end-to-end execution of introductory sessions for new members, including curriculum development, material preparation, and follow-up (calls/texts).
  • Performance Tracking: Maintain recruitment databases and tracking tools, ensuring organizers and canvassers utilize these systems accurately for data integrity.
  • Identifies and communicates volunteer opportunities for phone banking
  • Coordinates voter registration trainings requests, and ensures end-to-end support, from scheduling and sign-up to facilitator assignment
  • Collects and manages data integrity of voter data on the front end; shares awareness of rights
  • Maintains security of voter registration data
  • Supports outreach efforts for key organizing campaigns
  • Develops member leaders advancing them through a ladder of engagement sustaining their membership over time.

  • Attends relevant coalition meetings, actively participates and offers relevant opportunities for young people to meaningfully engage in campaigns
  • Leads efforts for community recruitment and participation in campaign activities
  • Coordinates regional cultural activities and outreach events in-person and virtually events to bring members together
  • Leads a temporary canvasser/organizing team to conduct one-on-one conversations with potential youth members to build rapport and identify interests and volunteer opportunities. As needed to recruit canvassers/organizers may also directly conduct one-to-one
  • Trains canvasser/organizers on key skills needed for successful outreach including 1:1, story of self, presentations/tabling, and facilitation
  • Recruits, hires, trains, manages and develops the organizers alongside the Organizing Director[
  • Ensure the timely, accurate, and legally compliant completion of all required HR, payroll, and finance-related supervisory responsibilities, in coordination with the HR and Operations teams.
  • Ensures redistribution of workload for unfilled directly-reporting positions, consulting with their supervisor as necessary
