About the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS): The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads Indiana's emergency planning and operations, first responder training, and fire and building safety. The Indiana State Fire Marshal leads the Division of Fire and Building Safety (within IDHS), which oversees the enforcement of building codes and includes a fire investigations unit. The agency certifies and trains thousands of first responders and also hosts state-level exercises each year. IDHS also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which leads response and coordination efforts for large-magnitude incidents.

Requirements

  • Hold a National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials Certification and a National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities Certification.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Thorough knowledge of state laws, administrative rules, and regulations concerning elevator and amusement devices and all applicable building and fire prevention codes.
  • Specialized knowledge of factory fabrication, engineering practices, and procedures for elevator and amusement devices.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems concerning non-compliance with codes.
  • Ability to read construction plans, evaluate stress loads, and issue quality controls.
  • Ability to use measuring and mechanical devices related to elevator and amusement devices.
  • Ability to technically and correctly represent elevator and amusement device codes to engineers, manufacturers, and fixed and portable amusement owners/operators.
  • Supervisory skills in organizing and motivating subordinates.
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide definitive interpretations for applicable elevator and amusement ride codes in disputed enforcement situations.
  • Inspect installations involving difficult or complex situations, ensuring compliance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Investigate field/consumer complaints and attempt to negotiate a solution.
  • Serve as an expert witness in court regarding elevator and amusement device code violations.
  • Exercise authority to halt installation for non-compliance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Prepare and submit management reports to the elevator safety division director.
  • Speaks to local groups concerning mission-related issues.
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
