About The Position

The State & Local Tax (SALT) Manager role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across a growing SALT practice by advising clients on complex state income tax issues and developing people. This position involves working closely with clients and colleagues to navigate multi-state tax challenges while helping shape thoughtful, practical solutions. The role is part of a collaborative team that values technical excellence, sound judgment, and long-term client relationships. The SALT Manager will manage state income tax compliance and consulting engagements across a variety of industries, serving as a trusted advisor on filing positions, risk areas, and opportunities for tax savings. Responsibilities include leading and overseeing engagements from planning through delivery, setting timelines, supervising and mentoring staff, and performing detailed technical reviews to ensure quality and accuracy. Team members will act as technical resources for others, contribute to practice development efforts, and support broader firm growth through collaboration and business development. The position blends hands-on technical work with leadership, coaching, and client relationship management.

Requirements

  • Five to eight years of progressive State and Local Tax consulting and/or compliance experience in public accounting or a combination of corporate and public accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated successful experience as a supervisor.
  • Must pass a background check, including a credit check, at any time to remain eligible for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Manage large state income tax compliance projects and identify tax savings opportunities and areas of risk.
  • Advise clients on state filing positions and requirements.
  • Coach, train and mentor state and local tax staff as well as staff in other practice groups.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan, supervise, and execute holistic approaches to complex individual and commercial state tax issues.
  • Work closely with partners, principals, senior managers, managers, seniors, and staff in other practice groups to integrate practice development skills into a team approach to client service and new business development.
  • Serve as a technical resource for Seniors, and Associates, as well as clients, in area of specialization and expertise; identify new technical issues in specialty area and take initiative to communicate with others on staff to increase awareness and understanding of the issue(s).
  • Gain experience delivering state and local tax advisory services, including refund reviews, nexus studies, taxability matrices, voluntary disclosures, tax minimization studies, and assisting with business development opportunities.
  • Conduct sophisticated tax research, consulting, and analysis to plan transactions and to resolve compliance issues.
  • Participate in activities which support practice development and firm growth strategies and goals.
  • Assist shareholders and principals in identifying and proposing new work for existing clients and engage in professional activities such as writing and publishing articles, preparing, and delivering speeches, teaching courses or attending professional events.
