This is the true story of food insecurity — and as the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina’s Staff Writer, you will play a key role in sharing the powerful voices and stories at the center of our mission and vision. This role is ideal for a purpose-driven communicator who thrives on collaboration, storytelling, and connecting people to meaningful impact. passionate and skilled Staff Writer As a key member of the External Communications Team, the Staff Writer will identify and develop compelling, people-centered stories across digital and print — with a primary focus on the Food Bank’s Hunger Matters publication. Your mission-driven journalism will elevate the voices of neighbors, farmers, pantry leaders, and supporters to raise awareness and mobilize action in our shared fight to end hunger.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in nonprofit communications, journalism, public relations, or related fields.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to translate complex information into compelling, accessible content.
  • Strong storytelling instincts rooted in empathy, community awareness, and an understanding of social impact work.
  • Experience in digital content creation, newsletter development, and social media strategy.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and content management or email marketing platforms such as WordPress, Constant Contact, Canva, or Axios HQ.
  • Commitment to the Food Bank’s mission, vision, and values including equity, dignity, and collaboration.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with hunger-relief, social service, or community-based organizations is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to identify powerful narratives that illustrate the drivers of hunger and real-world solutions to insecurity.
  • Develop engaging stories and articles that spotlight neighbors lived experiences and the combined efforts of farmers, partner agencies, and supporters that drive our work.
  • volunteers, donors, and community programs such as schools, pantries and Senior Food Boxes.
  • Develop and execute content strategies that align with the Food Bank’s mission and amplify our impact across Eastern and Central North Carolina.
  • Build and maintain an editorial calendar that reflects the Food Bank’s strategic priorities, community campaigns, and seasonal initiatives such as Stop Summer Hunger, Holiday Meals
  • Edit and proofread content to ensure accuracy, clarity, and alignment with the Food Bank’s voice and brand standards.
  • Support press release drafting, media advisories, and storytelling for earned media opportunities.
  • Collaborate with leadership and communications partners to craft talking points, blogs, and community-facing materials that reflect the Food Bank’s values and initiatives.
  • Assist with web content updates and ensure all communications reflect the organization’s mission, diversity, and equity priorities.
  • Help draft and schedule creative, mission-focused social media content (2–3 posts per week) across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X (formerly Twitter).
  • Write concise, emotionally resonant copy for campaigns, calls to action, and impact highlights.
  • Support the development and growth of email subscribers and social followers through authentic engagement and storytelling.
  • Work closely with the Communications Manager to measure engagement metrics and refine strategies to increase reach and impact.
  • Partner with internal departments, including Volunteer Engagement, Programs, and Development, to ensure consistent messaging and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Build relationships with community partners and agency representatives to highlight their contributions to the collective fight against hunger.
  • Participate in weekly communications meetings and brainstorming sessions, bringing creativity, curiosity, and a solutions-oriented mindset.
