About The Position

About the Team The Promotions & Rewards Promotions platform powers offers, coupons, discounts, and Walmart Rewards across online and instore journeys. Our Promotions Engine and Reward Service and evaluate eligibility at Walmart scale with low latency, integrate seamlessly with other systems, and provide the foundational incentives platform for business teams to launch new experiences quickly and safely. Position Summary As a Staff Software Engineer, you will own technical strategy and architecture for core services that act as a platform for multiple incentive types-enabling faster launches, safer changes, and new offer types at Walmart scale. You’ll collaborate with other Staff Engineers to set the technical vision, influence cross pillar priorities, and lead multiteam initiatives that deliver measurable business outcomes while maintaining SLOs, resiliency, and compliance. Requirements

  • 10+ years in software engineering; leading architecture for at scale.
  • 5+ years distributed, low-latency backend systems
  • Expertise in , Spring Boot, Kafka, (Cassandra/Dynamo), and RDBMS; deep knowledge of caching, idempotency, Java (11/17/21) NoSQL concurrency, and consistency trade-offs.
  • Proven ability to set technical direction, influence stakeholders, and deliver multi team initiatives with measurable impact (latency, SLO set technical direction multi-team initiatives attainment, cost optimization).
  • Production experience on Kubernetes (WCNP or similar), service mesh, autoscaling, and advanced rollout strategies (canary, blue/green, shadowing)..
  • Strong observability and operational readiness mindset (SLOs, dashboards/alerts, incident drills, RCAs).

Nice To Haves

  • Domain experience in promotions/loyalty/rewards, checkout, payments, or policy/rule engines.
  • Experience designing multi-tenant, self-serve platform capabilities (APIs/SDKs/tooling) for rapid onboarding of new incentive types.

Responsibilities

  • Platform Architecture & Leadership Define and evolve domain models, APIs, and event-driven designs to support diverse incentives (stacking, exclusivity, conflict resolution).
  • Standardize platform primitives (idempotency, versioned policies, feature flagging, rollout strategies) to enable rapid, lowrisk launches across programs.
  • Drive long-term architectural roadmap, balancing feature velocity with platform health and tech debt reduction.
  • Operational Excellence at Scale: Own SLOs, capacity planning, and cost-to-serve; design for peak-season resiliency on WCNP/Kubernetes with canary/shadowing and automated rollback.
  • Lead observability strategy (metrics/logs/traces), incident readiness, and postmortem culture across squads.
  • Eventing & Workflows Architect event-driven pipelines with Kafka; design durable state and reconciliation across NoSQL/RDBMS.
  • For rewards accrual/redemption, lead workflow orchestration (e.g., Temporal) for multi-step processes with retries and exactly-once semantics.
  • Cross-Team Leadership & Influence Translate business objectives into sequenced technical roadmaps, influencing product and platform priorities across Pillar2 and partner orgs.
  • Mentor Senior Engineers and Tech Leads; lead design reviews and raise engineering standards across multiple teams.
