The Role As a member of the Infotainment and Connectivity Software Safety team, the Staff Software Safety Engineer leads and supports safety initiatives in all phases of system development (concept, requirements, design, implementation, verification and validation) for software that is core to our Infotainment and Connectivity systems. You will conduct safety analyses , help create safety requirements for components of the software platform (e.g., middleware, platform health diagnostics, Linux OS) , provide guidance to the software development team , ensure safety requirements are implemented properly, and verify safe platform software solutions for vehicles today and tomorrow. What You’ll Do Develop software safety concepts / Conduct software safety analyses and create safety requirements for Linux-based infrastructure/platform software (e.g., middleware, platform health diagnostics, Linux OS), by collaborating with cross functional teams including system safety and software engineers as well as hardware and software suppliers. Ensure that software safety requirements are complete, consistent, and aligned/traceable to system-level safety requirements. Support software teams in software design, implementation of safety mechanisms, and testing to confirm that safety requirements are met. Ensure adherence to GM’s safety standards and software development processes. Collaborate with GM system safety to align safety strategies . Escalate any unresolved safety-related issues and confirm that the resolution process has been followed. Lead or contribute to initiatives towards the continuous improvement of the safety and security of the embedded software, and the development processes. Interface with corporate and industry experts to stay current in safety processes, methods, and tools. Participate in safety assessments, audits, and reviews . Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Software, Computer, Control, Mechatronics), Computer Science, or related fields . A minimum of 10 years embedded systems development experience in safety-critical domains (automotive, aerospace, medical, nuclear) . Demonstrated performance in a position requiring excellent understanding of embedded software implementation details as well as the larger systems picture . Familiarity with ISO 26262 and other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C . Embedded Linux development experience . Full software development lifecycle experience (software requirements, design, coding, verification) . Proficiency in embedded C/C++ . Excellent oral and written communication skills . Ability to work independently and in a team environment, interfacing with GM engineers and suppliers globally . Strong organizational skills with attention to detail . What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) Familiar with secure boot, SELinux polices, MMU, Linux hardening configurations, real-time scheduling, CPU isolation, Yocto-based BSP hardening Knowledge of software architecture and design patterns . Experience reviewing and/or developing software requirements from system-level requirements . Multi-core programming and real-time operating system experience. Familiarity with automotive systems and active safety and automated driving systems in particular . Knowledge of in-vehicle communication networks (CAN, Ethernet , LIN, I2C ) . Advanced Degree
