About The Position

The Department of Pathology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a Staff Clinical Pathologist supporting Transfusion Medicine and Clinical Laboratory Immunology, in addition to supporting other Core Lab services, including Clinical Chemistry and Point-of-Care Testing. The proportion of engagement in these areas is flexible and will ultimately depend on the individual’s interests, prior experience and qualifications. St. Jude Pathology is a leader in innovative diagnostic techniques and high-quality laboratory medicine, and our clinical laboratories provide state-of-the art support to patient care, with abundant opportunities for collaborative academic activities. The department achieved ISO15189 accreditation in 2016, the first children’s hospital in North America to gain this status. St. Jude provides a rich academic environment, with a unique set of diagnostic challenges and a mission to develop new ways to cure pediatric patients with catastrophic diseases. The successful candidate will have the appropriate training and certification with the American Board of Pathology. A record of scholarly achievement, additional training, experience or subspecialty certification in transfusion medicine, immunology, or clinical chemistry is desirable. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is one of the premier pediatric cancer hospitals in the USA and has a large faculty of clinical and basic investigators organized into traditional academic departments. Strong interdepartmental programs are present in Infectious Diseases, Bone Marrow Transplant, Hematologic Malignancies, Solid Tumor Biology, Neuro-oncology, and Molecular Oncogenesis. Clinical and basic research activities are carried out in adjoining state-of-the-art buildings that provide an environment that fosters close collaboration between clinical and basic investigators. Requirements

  • MD or DO degree required.
  • Board certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology or Pediatric Pathology, or Board certification by the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology is required.
  • Experience in pediatric anatomic and/or clinical pathology required.
  • Unrestricted medical license to practice in the State of Tennessee.
  • Must maintain active unrestricted privileges at SJCRH.
  • Strong clinical skills.

  • Ability to interact pleasantly and tactfully with co-workers, patients and families.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to patients and families.

Nice To Haves

  • Board certification in Transfusion Medicine is preferred.
  • A record of scholarly achievement, additional training, experience or subspecialty certification in transfusion medicine, immunology, or clinical chemistry is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provides anatomic pathology or clinical pathology services as assigned, in a patient centric fashion according to established standards, general and service-specific scopes of care, policies and procedures, and patient-specific protocols.
  • Annually demonstrates clinical competencies for credentialed service and the following responsibilities.
  • Participates in analyzer validation, verification processes and test method development as required.
  • Ensures timely completion of work within established turnaround times.
  • Interacts collaboratively with clinicians regarding patient care issues.
  • Provides reports as necessary to third party providers and sub-specialists.
  • Acts as a participatory member of the clinical care teams.
  • Complies with all clinical staff bylaws, rules and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with laboratory staff, medical staff and other departments/services by participating in conferences, performance improvement projects, peer review, utilization review and committee work.
  • Consults with clinicians to ensure the appropriate utilization of pathology services.
  • Provides outside second opinion consultations as required.
  • Participates in department quality activities as required.
  • Performs any delegated duties of the CLIA medical director effectively.
  • Performs compliant patient billing.
  • Supports and participates in teaching programs in Pathology.
  • Conducts educational programs for technologists, medical students, residents, fellows and physicians as required.
  • Teach at clinical conferences and quality reviews.
  • Attends continuing education seminars to maintain and advance knowledge; share knowledge with colleagues.
  • Provides formal teaching to Pathology residents and fellows.
  • Participates in research programs related to diagnosis, pathogenesis and/or therapy of pediatric disease within the clinical scope of responsibility.
  • Supports clinical research activities
  • Participates in investigator-initiated research as requested and as funding allows.
  • Participates in the detection, reporting, and improvement of systems to prevent patient care incidents and improve patient safety and quality.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
