About The Position

Precision Neuroscience is building a next-generation brain–computer interface (BCI) to heal and empower millions of people living with neurological conditions. Our first product, Layer 7, is designed to help people with severe paralysis operate digital devices using only their thoughts—opening up new possibilities for daily life. Our team brings together experts in neurosurgery, AI and machine learning, microfabrication, electrical engineering, clinical science, and more. We combine deep technical rigor with a people-first mindset to turn breakthrough research into real-world medical solutions. As a Precision employee, you’ll join one of the fastest-moving and best-capitalized companies in the emerging field of brain–computer interfaces. Since our founding in 2021, we have raised more than $180 million, advanced our technology through validation, and initiated human trials with leading hospitals across the country. Our Values: We build for human impact, measuring progress by the lives our work can change. We do no harm, holding ourselves to the highest standards of safety, integrity, and responsibility. We innovate with urgency, because the stakes are high and our users can’t wait. We bring sharp minds, open ears, pairing expertise with curiosity, humility, and respect. And we lead the way, taking ownership of our work and helping to shape the future of our field. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Neuroscientist with a deep background in neuro-engineering to lead the discovery and development of our next-generation BCI systems. In this role, you will sit at the intersection of biology and engineering, ensuring our hardware and algorithms are optimized for the complexities of the human brain. You will be a key driver of our research roadmap, moving fluidly between high-level discovery and the hands-on execution of clinical and animal protocols. This position will be based in our New York City or Santa Clara office. We can consider remote workers, but we cannot consider individuals who are not currently based in the US and are not legally authorized to work in the US.

Requirements

  • Educational Background: PhD in Neuroscience or a related quantitative field.
  • Extensive Neuro-engineering Experience: 2+ years of post-PhD experience in a research or industrial setting, specifically focused on the interface between neural tissue and engineered systems.
  • BCI Expertise: Proven track record working with Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), specifically with high-density electrophysiology (ECoG or penetrating arrays).
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong experience in neural signal processing and data analysis (Python, MATLAB, or C++).
  • Experimental Design: Deep experience designing and executing complex animal (in vivo) and/or human clinical studies.
  • Innovation Mindset: A history of "first-principles" thinking with the ability to solve ambiguous problems in a fast-paced startup environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with thin-film microelectronics or flexible electronics.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements for Class III medical devices (IDE/PMA).
  • Knowledge of cortical mapping and large-scale neural population dynamics.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Discovery: Spearhead the research and conceptualization of next-generation versions of the Layer 7 system, identifying new ways to increase bandwidth, resolution, and clinical utility.
  • Protocol Development: Design and drive animal and clinical research protocols to validate device safety, efficacy, and performance.
  • System Optimization: Work closely with hardware and software teams to optimize device design and refine decoding algorithms, ensuring they meet the requirements of real-world neural data.
  • Data Analysis: Interpret complex electrophysiological data to provide actionable insights for the engineering and product teams.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Act as the scientific bridge between the clinical team and the engineering departments (Microfabrication, Implant Hardware, and ML).
  • Regulatory Support: Contribute scientific expertise to FDA submissions and regulatory documentation as we scale our clinical presence.
