About The Position

S&ME is seeking a professional to join our Environmental team in Charleston, South Carolina, as a Staff Industrial Hygienist and help us provide technical and high-quality engineering solutions to our clients. As a Staff Industrial Hygienist , you will make a measurable difference in workplace health and safety. In this role, you'll be trusted to ensure environments are free from hazardous materials such as indoor air contaminants and asbestos. Your work helps protect lives, maintain regulatory compliance, and build client confidence. You'll manage projects from assessment through reporting, mentor junior staff, and contribute to business growth, all while advancing your technical expertise in a collaborative setting.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, or other related sciences
  • A minimum of 2 years of industrial hygiene field sampling experience
  • Good business and technical writing skills
  • You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as: Working outdoors in varying weather conditions Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment) Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
  • Candidates must comply with our Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Industrial Hygiene Assessments: Perform field evaluations for chemicals, noise and indoor environmental quality (i.e. mold) using standardized procedures. Collect samples, ensure quality control, and analyze data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Conduct Hazardous Material Assessments: Perform field evaluations for asbestos, lead-based paint, and indoor air quality using standardized procedures. Collect samples, ensure quality control, and analyze data for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare Professional Reports: Develop clear, detailed reports for small to medium-sized projects, including recommendations and findings. Collaborate with senior reviewers to ensure compliance and technical accuracy.
  • Develop Project Proposals: Scope and price projects with routine technical objectives. Draft proposals for client review and assist in securing new business opportunities.
  • Support Business Development: Represent the company at local professional organizations, participate in committees, and accompany senior staff on client visits to strengthen relationships and expand market presence.
  • Mentor Junior Team Members: Provide guidance and training to junior staff on field data collection and observation tasks, fostering professional growth and maintaining high standards of work quality.
