About The Position

The Role: As a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Engineer within General Motors’ AV Core Infrastructure team, you will design, build, and maintain advanced HIL systems that accelerate validation of embedded controllers and perception systems across next-genereation vehicles. You’ll bridge mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines to deliver scalable, reliable, and maintainable test infrastructure enabling data-driven development of automated driving features. You will collaborate with systems engineers, embedded software developers, integration labs, and operations teams to ensure our HIL platforms remain at the forefront of validation capability—powering the test flywheel that drives GM’s future of safe, autonomous mobility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering—or equivalent hands-on experience in HIL, lab automation, or robotics integration.
  • 7+ years of experience in design, integration, and maintenance of hardware validation systems or HIL infrastructure.
  • Strong mechanical design background (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Inventor) with proven ability to take concepts to production hardware.
  • Experience with CNC machining, 3D printing (SLA/FDM), laser cutting, and general fabrication tools.
  • Familiarity with ECU harnessing, power systems, and signal integrity best practices.
  • Competence with Linux CLI, networking (Ethernet, switches, VLANs), and power distribution.
  • Proven record of cross-functional collaboration, vendor management, and hands-on debugging of complex electromechanical systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or maintaining large-scale HIL or test automation systems supporting multiple ECUs or vehicle domains.
  • Familiarity with Python, CAN/LIN tools (Vector, Kvaser, etc.), and test automation frameworks.
  • Experience with thermal and EMI management, system grounding, and rack-level cable routing.
  • Knowledge of lab operations, EHS compliance, and facility management.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and sustain modular HIL systems for ECU and subsystem validation across multiple vehicle platforms.
  • Architect scalable rack-based test solutions integrating power distribution, network infrastructure, and environmental management for high-availability operation.
  • Lead end-to-end manufacturing and integration workflows, from CAD design and parts procurement to bench commissioning and documentation.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures for bench assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure repeatability and uptime.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Systems, Firmware, and Validation Engineering to define I/O mappings, harnessing, and test configurations.
  • Deploy automation and monitoring systems for bench health, including power cycling, network diagnostics, and logging infrastructure.
  • Drive lab capacity expansion projects, including facility layout, power/network planning, and thermal management.
  • Continuously innovate to improve efficiency, reusability, and modularity across the HIL fleet; contribute to design libraries and shared tools.
  • Mentor technicians and junior engineers, developing training materials and ensuring adherence to quality standards.
