About The Position

As the Staff Engineer with the Reliability and Observability team you will lead cross-functional teams in developing technical strategies to aggregate and operationalize metrics and data from multiple systems into a unified Data Mesh, providing actionable insights to leadership in driving decisions, risk assessment, funding allocation, modernization and remediation planning, also acting as a central integration point for other systems to leverage via API. The ideal candidate brings expertise in observability, data analytics, development, cloud technologies, and systems design, with a proven ability to deliver technical initiatives in a fast-paced environment. You will be recognized as a technical leader and thought partner across multiple products and systems, mentoring squads and influencing beyond your immediate teams with additional opportunities to be involved in the latest technologies, including agentic AI. This role is hybrid, which means you will work some days on site at a Best Buy location and some days virtually from home or other non-Best Buy location. The specific work arrangements vary by role and team. The recruiter or hiring manager will provide more details during the hiring process. For this role, you must be located within a drivable distance to our office in Richfield, Minnesota.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree OR equivalent relevant professional experience
  • 5+ years of experience in data analysis and enterprise-level database design
  • 5+ years of hands-on expertise with GCP or AWS products and services
  • 5+ years programming, IaC, CI/CD automation, and test-driven development
  • 3+ years providing technical leadership and mentoring within cross-functional teams

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated success driving cross-functional initiatives and fostering alignment across diverse teams
  • Skilled in clear communication and proactive risk management for complex projects
  • Expertise in SRE practices and observability frameworks (CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry)
  • Strong background in data governance and compliance
  • Experienced in designing cost-optimized cloud architectures
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and modern software development practices

Responsibilities

  • Own metric ingestion and validation across platforms, ensuring accuracy and consistency in enterprise scorecards
  • Collaborate across engineering, infrastructure, and data teams to maintain metric integrity and accountability
  • Influence architecture and technical decisions for complex systems, ensuring scalable and reliable solutions
  • Identify opportunities to improve SDLC and observability; recommend tools, practices and standards to enhance efficiency and quality
  • Communicate trade-offs between technical, analytical, and product priorities to guide balanced decision-making
  • Build strong technical and business relationships across teams, acting as a mentor and thought leader
