As a Staff Database Administrator II, you are responsible for the development, performance, and reliability of our company's databases. You focus on building and maintaining secure, scalable data systems while supporting high availability and integrity across environments. You work closely with engineers to optimize schema design, monitor system performance, and resolve production issues with a focus on long-term maintainability. You operate as a highly skilled technical expert, bringing deep database knowledge to the team and driving improvements that help scale our applications effectively. You bring deep technical expertise and a collaborative mindset to partner with engineering and platform teams. You proactively identify and resolve production issues, focusing on long-term maintainability. You join developer calls, provide architectural guidance, and coach best practices with empathy and clarity. You navigate infrastructure trade-offs with ease and contribute to strategic initiatives related to security, compliance, and business continuity. Requirements

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience designing, implementing, and managing relational databases in enterprise or government environments
  • Expert knowledge of database architecture, data modeling, indexing, and query optimization
  • Experience with database security controls, backup and disaster recovery planning
  • Highly skilled in replication, partitioning, and performance tuning
  • Ability to lead architecture reviews, data governance discussions, and integration with other platforms
  • Strong skills in data cleaning, refinement, and preparation for analysis and modeling
  • Experience with datastore backup and recovery solutions, high availability, sharding, and replication
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to innovate and implement creative solutions
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (i.e. Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi)
  • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality results

  • Comfort with discussing tradeoffs between B-tree and bitmap indexes
  • Understanding (and helping others understand) Cardinality, Data types, Transactions and Constraints in database design

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with evolving infrastructure

Responsibilities

  • Enjoy a mixture of schema design, reliability engineering, query and performance automation, security, and operations work
  • Develop and implement database scaling strategies like sharding, replication, and data partitioning for high-growth applications.
  • Optimize MySQL and PostgreSQL databases for performance, stability, and security.
  • Design, build, and maintain database schemas and storage systems that support scalable application growth
  • Monitor performance and tune databases to ensure reliability, high availability, and low latency
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to support data migrations, application integrations, and optimized queries
  • Plan and coordinate regular database maintenance tasks to ensure top performance.
  • Create and maintain documentation related to database best practices and usage patterns.
  • Stay current with industry trends and best practices in database management.
  • Track database incidents and design root cause fixes and preventative measures
  • Participate in design reviews and provide database expertise for system enhancements
