Set the technical vision and architecture for scalable, intelligent data platforms that power millions of Sam’s Club customers and enable Agentic AI systems to reason, plan, and act autonomously. Own end-to-end data architecture for agent-aware systems, ensuring data is discoverable, semantically rich, trustworthy, and optimized for LLMs, co-pilots, and multi-agent workflows. Lead cross-team technical strategy by partnering with Engineering, AI/ML, Product, and Platform teams to align data roadmaps with long-term autonomous decision-making goals. Influence product direction by working closely with Product Management and Business stakeholders to define high-impact data products that unlock intelligent automation, recommendations, and self-optimizing systems. Design foundational capabilities that unify structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data into context-aware representations consumable by AI agents and knowledge systems. Establish best practices and standards for agent-ready data modeling, semantic layers, metadata management, and knowledge graph design across the organization. Drive operational excellence by defining and implementing observability, telemetry, lineage, and auditability patterns tailored for data used in autonomous and regulated AI workflows. Mentor and technically lead senior engineers, providing architectural guidance, design reviews, and hands-on support on complex, high-risk initiatives. Lead full-lifecycle, multi-quarter initiatives, balancing near-term delivery with long-term platform scalability and adaptability for evolving AI paradigms. Champion a data-first, AI-forward culture, proactively identifying opportunities to modernize legacy systems and accelerate innovation in intelligent automation.

Requirements

  • 7–10+ years of experience in data engineering, building and operating large-scale, distributed, fault-tolerant data platforms.
  • Deep expertise in cloud-native data ecosystems (GCP or Azure preferred), including services such as BigQuery, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, or equivalent, with experience shaping platform-level decisions.
  • Proven track record of designing data architectures that scale across multiple teams and use cases, including batch, streaming, and hybrid systems.
  • Strong understanding of agent-consumable data patterns, including semantic modeling, embeddings, knowledge graphs, and context enrichment strategies.
  • Expert-level skills in data modeling and system design, with the ability to reason about how schema, latency, and storage choices impact retrieval quality and AI reasoning.
  • Hands-on experience or strong familiarity with LLM-enabled systems, including prompt orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), or agent frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, CrewAI).
  • Advanced knowledge of data governance and trust frameworks, including quality, access control, lineage, and compliance—especially for AI auditability.
  • Fluency in Python, Java, or Scala, with a strong engineering mindset around testability, maintainability, and performance; deep experience with Spark/PySpark.
  • Expert SQL skills and experience optimizing analytical workloads across massive datasets.
  • Strong systems thinking and technical leadership, with the ability to influence without authority and drive alignment across organizational boundaries.
  • Experience with real-time and analytical tooling such as Kafka, Spark Streaming, Druid, Presto, and how they fit into modern data and AI architectures.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and 4 years' experience in software engineering or related field.
  • 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related field.
  • Master's degree in Computer Science and 2 years' experience in software engineering or related field.
  • 3 years' experience in data engineering, database engineering, business intelligence, or business analytics.

  • The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include Regional Pay Zone (RPZ) (based on location).
