About The Position

As a Technician, Rotating Equipment Lead for the Billings area, you will serve as the regional technical lead for rotating equipment and a working lead for technicians who operate and maintain the equipment. In this role, you will serve as the technical subject matter expert (SME) of all maintenance and repairs on pipeline pump station and terminal rotating equipment including motors, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, compressors, and related mechanical systems while providing day-to-day technical support and guidance to technicians in the region who operate and maintain the equipment. You will lead complex troubleshooting and repairs on rotating equipment, support reliability initiatives, and help standardize best practices across the area. In addition, you will maintain qualifications and documentation in accordance with all applicable DOT regulations and Company standards to ensure compliance. This position reports directly to the Supervisor, Rotating Equipment – West and is based in Billings, MT, supporting pump stations, terminals, and associated Midstream assets in the North Region. (This role supports the liquid operations segment only and excludes gas fields and gas plants within the North Region.)

Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Valid driver’s license, maintained in good standing
  • 5 or more years of experience maintaining rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, motors, etc.)
  • Certified Level 1 vibration analysis
  • Ability to obtain all required Operator Qualifications (OQ’s) for assigned tasks
  • Ability and willingness to perform/comply, with or without a reasonable accommodation, with the following: Climb various ladders and stairs 5 to 40 feet in height to operate valves, gauge tanks, or perform maintenance on equipment
  • Raise and transport articles weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Walk, stand, stoop, sit, climb, and carry material daily on even and uneven terrain as needed
  • Travel up to 50% of the time within the assigned region
  • Make long commutes to work in a remote area
  • Work scheduled or unscheduled overtime on an as-needed basis
  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
  • Work alone a high percentage of the time
  • Wear fire-retardant clothing and other personal protective equipment, such as steel-toe shoes, and ear and eye protection

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree or technical degree in pump or engine mechanics or related field
  • Certified Level 2 vibration analysis or higher certification
  • 10 or more years as an Industrial Mechanic or Millwright
  • 10 or more years of rotating equipment experience such as rebuilding or replacing pumps, gearboxes compressors and replacing mechanical seals
  • Experience providing technical direction or informal leadership to other technicians or contractors
  • Experience with Norberg, Sterling, and Caterpillar engines
  • Working knowledge of API 610 and API 686 standards for rotating equipment
  • MLT1 Lubrication Certification, Ultrasound Lubrication Certification, or Motion Amplification Certifications
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and SAP
  • Working knowledge of code requirements, including OSHA, Process Safety Management (PSM), and Department of Transportation (DOT)

Responsibilities

  • Lead rotating equipment support for the North Region
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for rotating equipment within the liquid operations segment of the North Region.
  • Provide technical direction and serve as the SME to technicians on assets such as pumps, compressors, and motors.
  • Guide and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance on rotating and fixed equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
  • Lead complex troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on pumps, compressors, and motors, including mechanical seals and alignment.
  • Oversee execution of key repair steps on critical and specialty equipment, including seal installation, setting rotor position and thrust. Set hold points and witness points and serve as the sign-off to proceed.
  • Own the critical rebuild schedule and critical inventory within liquid operations segment the region.
  • Own the preventive and condition-based maintenance programs for rotating equipment within the liquid operations segment of the North Region.
  • Own the vibration program for liquid operations and coordinate with technicians, as applicable, to assess asset health prior to break-in work and validate priorities.
  • Write and update procedures, work instructions, training materials, and provide training to the area.
  • Maintain current and accurate documentation of maintenance activities, including work orders, equipment history, and technical records.
  • Maintain mechanical and technical administrative records, including prints, project reports, and equipment data.
  • Train and mentor less experienced employees on rotating equipment fundamentals, API and ANSI Standards as well as company standards.
  • Oversee and direct the work of contract personnel performing mechanical and rotating equipment tasks.
  • Help drive teamwork, communication, and knowledge sharing across the region.
  • Serve as caretaker for the spares.
