About The Position

BNSF Railway is one of the largest U.S. railroads, transporting freight across 28 western states and 3 Canadian provinces. The Telecom Maintainer II position is a full-time role within the Telecommunications Department, focused on maintaining critical communications systems to ensure safe and efficient train movements. This role involves working 40 hours per week, 6 days a week (5 regular working days and one on-call day), and is subject to 24/6 on-call duty, overtime, alternate shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift assignments are union-governed and typically based on seniority. Significant travel (50% to 80%) to job sites for extended periods (days or weeks) within the designated seniority region is required. Company-paid on-the-job and classroom training, including travel to the BNSF Training Center, is provided. The work environment is safety-sensitive, involving diverse and extreme weather conditions, uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy machinery. Employees must adhere to safety rules, policies, and regulations, including wearing personal protective equipment. A 120-day probationary period applies, with an additional 120 days to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License. Relocation assistance is not available. Requirements

  • Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • 21 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
  • Able to work safely in diverse and extreme weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.
  • Able to work 6 days a week (5 regular working days and one on-call day), subject to on-call (24/6), overtime, alternate shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Able to meet travel requirements of 50% to 80% to job sites for extended periods.
  • Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear, and understand) in English.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
  • Have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or be able to obtain one within 240 days of employment.
  • Able to visually distinguish among red, blue, green, and yellow colors.
  • Ability to differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) and discriminate (comprehend) verbal communication in the work environment.
  • Able to use hands and hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling.
  • Able to perform work on uneven surfaces, climb ladders and on/off equipment.
  • Able to work from a boom truck basket.
  • Able to bend, walk, stand, and sit occasionally with breaks.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
  • Able to climb and perform work on tower structures in excess of 50 feet.
  • 3 years minimum of verifiable experience coordinating information from several sources to assign work assignments and coordinate schedules.
  • 1-year minimum of verifiable experience conducting analysis of computer-generated reports.
  • Able to multitask technical activities and office duties.
  • 1-year minimum of verifiable experience in budgeting and material management.
  • Union membership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and required union dues per union agreement.
  • Pre-employment background verification, medical review and pre-employment drug screen.
  • Obtain a TWIC if work requires unescorted access to secure areas of port facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Installing, testing, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting communications equipment, both inside and outside, including assembling and/or dismantling communications equipment, parts and related items.
  • Installing, testing, and maintaining fiber optics, cables, towers, antennas, power plants, and microwave/radio sites, as well as terminating overhead/underground cabling and performing tower erection, rigging, installation and maintenance, including climbing towers.
  • Operating trucks and various equipment (tractors, trenchers, and digging machines) to support Telecom work.
