The Senior Taxonomist supports the day-to-day function of the Data & Marketing Solutions group by classifying transactions into a taxonomy using rules-based query language. Taxonomists work directly with the data, contextualizing it for better analysis, and continually audit and update the taxonomy to grow with data sets to ensure their long-term usability and best serve our clients. A successful Senior Taxonomist has an eye for detail, a knack for research, and aligns their work to established best practices. As part of the Engineering Group, the Senior Taxonomist leads other taxonomists on team initiatives and works with cross-functional teams for special projects.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates a proficiency in taxonomy classification and understands hierarchical ontologies
  • Expert in internet research and finding smaller brands
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Can work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including Sr management both written and verbal
  • Curiosity for solving problems and finding answers
  • High degree of: quality, accuracy, accountability
  • Collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to understand business requirements, priorities, and challenges
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience; or 3 years and an advanced degree
  • Bachelor’s degree in Library or Information Science or another related field or equivalent work experience

Nice To Haves

  • Masters of Library and Information Science or equivalent
  • T-SQL experience

Responsibilities

  • Research terms for classification within our standard taxonomy process utilizing the internet as well as our internal taxonomy
  • Use in-house software to classify daily imports of transaction data.
  • Update taxonomy categories in accordance with written standards and communicating changes among the team
  • Identify opportunities for rules adjustments as well as creating new rules that allow for accurate automatic classification
  • Proactively identify and remediate incorrect categories and categorizations.
  • Monitor market trends and fill gaps in data coverage for new and upcoming industries.
  • Lead teammates in collaborative efforts on special projects and cross functional teams
  • Train new employees on the usage of our systems and processes
  • Generate documentation for established processes to ensure consistency.
  • Mentor junior team members on system and processes
