Sr. Systems Engineer

The Walt Disney CompanyLos Angeles, CA

About The Position

At Disney, we’re storytellers. We make the impossible, possible. The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) is a world-class entertainment and technological leader. Walt’s passion was to continuously envision new ways to move audiences around the world—a passion that remains our touchstone in an enterprise that stretches from theme parks, resorts and a cruise line to sports, news, movies and a variety of other businesses. Uniting each endeavor is a commitment to creating and delivering unforgettable experiences — and we’re constantly looking for new ways to enhance these exciting experiences. The Enterprise Technology mission is to deliver technology solutions that align to business strategies while enabling enterprise efficiency and promoting cross-company collaborative innovation. Our group drives competitive advantage by enhancing our consumer experiences, enabling business growth, and advancing operational excellence. From the earliest concept through post‑production and delivery, global theatrical release and direct‑to‑consumer platforms, this role designs and operates the high‑performance storage platforms that power Disney Studios’ content pipeline. You will architect, build, and operate storage systems that support some of the most demanding media workflows in the world—where throughput, latency, resiliency, and scale are non‑negotiable. We are looking for a storage‑first engineer with deep expertise in large‑scale file systems, NAS/SAN platforms, and data‑intensive production environments. You are equally comfortable designing multi‑petabyte architectures, automating lifecycle management, and troubleshooting performance at the protocol and filesystem layer. You thrive in Linux environments, embrace infrastructure‑as‑code, and believe storage should be automated, observable, and self‑healing. You will be part of the team responsible for delivering enterprise and cloud‑integrated storage services for every Disney Studios group, ensuring that creative teams can work without interruption from ingest to archive. What You Bring Deep knowledge in storage architecture and problem solving – You take pride in designing resilient, scalable storage platforms and view complex data challenges as opportunities to engineer elegant, durable solutions. Comfortability with ambiguity and scale – You operate confidently in environments where workflows evolve, data volumes explode, and requirements are constantly shifting. Deep technical knowhow – You quickly absorb complex storage, filesystem, and data‑path concepts and apply them to real-world production challenges. Business‑awareness and outcome‑driven results – You connect storage design decisions to creative velocity, reliability, and cost efficiency, and can clearly articulate the value delivered.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience Storage & Filesystems
  • Extensive experience with high‑performance storage platforms used in media production (e.g., Isilon, Qumulo, NetApp, Quantum)
  • Deep knowledge of enterprise and clustered filesystems (OneFS, StorNext, Core, OnTap, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of file and data access protocols (SMB/SMBv3, NFS, CIFS) and their performance characteristics
  • Expertise in snapshotting, replication, tiering, and lifecycle management technologies Data Protection & Movement
  • Hands‑on experience with backup, archive, and restore platforms (Rubrik, Veeam, SDNA, etc.)
  • Familiarity with high‑speed content transfer technologies used in production environments (Signiant, Aspera)
  • Experience across SAN/block, NAS, clustered storage, and cloud object/file services
  • Strong understanding of storage networking (Ethernet, Fibre Channel, InfiniBand, TCP/IP, VLANs, bonding)
  • Experience provisioning and operating on‑prem and colocation data centers, including power, space, and connectivity
  • Proficiency with Linux/Unix and Windows in storage‑centric environments
  • Experience integrating storage with authentication and identity systems (AD, LDAP, Okta, etc)
  • Strong automation skills using Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, and scripting languages such as Python and Bash
  • Experience operating storage services in cloud/IaaS environments (AWS, Azure, etc)
  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms (VMware, KVM)

Responsibilities

  • Architect, deploy, and operate high‑performance storage systems supporting production and post‑production workflows
  • Define storage requirements, manage vendor relationships, and partner with Architecture teams to deliver reliable, scalable platforms
  • Design and maintain self‑healing, automated storage infrastructure using infrastructure‑as‑code principles
  • Implement and optimize replication, snapshot, tiering, and data‑protection strategies across on‑prem and cloud environments
  • Ensure security, encryption, access control, and compliance are embedded into all storage designs
  • Build and tune monitoring, logging, and performance‑analysis systems to support 24x7 reliability and forensic troubleshooting
  • Evaluate, prototype, and evangelize new storage technologies and architectures to improve performance, resiliency, and efficiency
  • Collaborate closely with systems, networking, cloud, and application teams to optimize end‑to‑end data paths
