About The Position

As a Sr Systems Design Engineer, you will support the development of automation solutions for new and existing products across business units & global production sites in our Vacuum Systems Division. In this role, you will collaborate with manufacturing and automation professionals in the development of automation solutions that enable the production of high tolerance instrumentation products, improving efficiency, cost, quality, and capacity in our global factories. This role will be a key member of the Operations Automation Team reporting to the Automation Project Manager. Requirements

  • BS degree in mechanical engineering or mechatronics
  • 5+ years of progressive project experience designing custom machinery, industrial automation equipment, or robotic systems
  • Demonstrated ability to create electrical schematics, plumbing schematics, model complex assemblies, and develop complete assembly documentation packages in CAD
  • Expert-level proficiency in 3d solid modeling (and simulation) in Solidworks
  • Strong GD&T skills with an understanding of common manufacturing processes including CNC machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, etc.
  • Must be able to work closely with the Automation Project Engineers to ensure to ensure designs account for sensor placement, cable routing, robot reach, and other constraints

Responsibilities

  • Designing custom hardware including end-of-arm tooling, machine frames, support structures, safety guarding, and other elements of an automation solution as needed
  • Developing CAD models and comprehensive documentation packages enabling automation partners to build complete solutions
  • Selecting and mechanically integrating standard automation components like pneumatic actuators, motors, sensors, grippers, and safety systems (light curtains, E-stops) into the overall system design
  • Collaborating with automation professionals in other divisions to learn and share best practices and automation standards (incl safety)
  • Working with selected vendors to manufacture custom tooling and fixture solutions as needed for part holding
  • Supporting integration, startup, verification, and troubleshooting of automated machine solutions
