About The Position

Sybase ASE database administrators are responsible for performing operational activities to manage, maintain, and optimize existing SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) environments to ensure high performance and availability. Key responsibilities include installation, patching, performance tuning, backup/recovery, security management, and troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Sciences, or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of working experience with Sybase ASE (12.x to 16.0)
  • Proficiency in Linux environments
  • Knowledge of Database Monitoring tools and techniques, including managing cache hit ratio, I/O performance, CPU/memory, and locks.
  • Strong Understanding of database internals, including memory management, lock contention, and I/O behavior.
  • 5+ years in a tier-3 production support position dealing with other functional and technology teams
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Strong ownership bias
  • Deadline and detail-oriented

Nice To Haves

  • Managing and troubleshooting Sybase Replication Server environments.
  • Running reorg/rebuilds, update stats, and managing tables (APL/DOL locking schemes).
  • Monitoring and managing storage capacity for databases

Responsibilities

  • Perform sustainment and system maintenance activities by troubleshooting Sybase ASE issues, documenting issue resolution.
  • Install, configure, upgrade, and patch SAP Sybase ASE databases.
  • Monitor system health and optimize database configuration for maximum performance.
  • Tune queries, optimizing indexing and analyze query plans.
  • Regularly check the ASE error log, analyze wait events and check for deadlocks, check for long-running, sleeping, or “infected” processes.
  • Execute backup strategies, data recovery, and ensure high availability, often using Replication Server. Ensure backups are running frequently enough and are consistent, accurate, and secure to meet contracted recovery point objectives (RPO).
  • Manage user access, permissions, and security compliance.
  • Perform database migrations, upgrades, and data extraction.
  • Participate in on call support rotation.
  • Build and maintain comprehensive documentation for problem resolution actions, root cause, procedures, etc.
  • Drive continual improvement in systems operations through collaboration with basis, OS, and Cloud Support teams
  • Actively engage in root cause analysis, in collaboration with other delivery team members.
