This Sr SEC Reporting Accountant role is a hybrid position, requiring the employee to report to one of Aflac's offices in Columbus, GA for at least 60% of the work week, while working from home (within the continental US) for the remaining portion. Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge, understanding, and ability to interpret and apply GAAP and SEC guidance, with an emphasis on insurance accounting
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with Workiva, SAP and/or similar accounting/financial reporting software
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), with an emphasis on insurance accounting
  • Strong knowledge of and experience in XBRL tagging and XBRL taxonomy
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience performing financial analysis, reporting, and/or process improvement
  • Demonstrated competencies in the areas of consulting, change management, quality and project management and continuous improvement
  • Excellent presentation, oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills to effectively interact with Aflac's senior management, and internal and external business contacts
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office software, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Bachelor's Degree In Accounting or a related discipline
  • Six years of professional, job-related work experience in SEC reporting or related accounting/reporting
  • Experience managing projects or implementation of continuous improvement initiatives
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and reviews Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings, which include the quarterly Form 10-Qs, annual Form 10-K, annual Form 11-K, Form 8-Ks and related XBRL data tagging, and other reports as needed; prepares financial reports for filings with other regulatory bodies as needed.
  • Executes Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls and ensures controls are operating effectively and SOX documentation is maintained and updated timely.
  • Monitors, interprets, and analyzes the regulatory environment and emerging regulations and issues affecting accounting standards, including those developed by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF), and all other relevant governing bodies.
  • Leads or participates on project teams for new standard implementations, ensuring all reporting requirements are satisfied in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and/or other relevant standards.
  • Acts in a senior capacity delegating assignments to, reviewing and approving the work of, and providing advice and direction to junior team members.
  • Leads or participates on project teams or committees assisting with the development, planning and implementation of strategic long-range and short-range goals, objectives and continuous improvement.
  • Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with business partners as their key point of contact in certain areas.
  • Works with SEC Reporting leadership in tracking the progress made on departmental goals.
  • Maintains and ensures a continuous improvement culture by developing and tracking KPIs with the team, as well as driving the effectiveness of daily huddle meetings.
