About The Position

The Sr Principal Control Systems Engineer plays a critical role in optimizing automation, infrastructure design, controls, and monitoring systems across the company’s recycling centers. The incumbent focuses on designing, implementing, and continuously improving the effectiveness of our machinery to enhance operational efficiency, equipment reliability, and system integration through hardware, software, systems, processes, and protocols. The Sr Principal Control Systems Engineer serves as a hands-on technical advisor to Area Functional Managers, General Managers, Operations Managers, and Supervisors. The incumbent will also partner with operations, engineering, IT, and maintenance teams to deliver cohesive and scalable automation solutions that support long-term operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of electrical schematics, instrumentation, and process control.
  • Proficiency in reviewing and interpreting CAD drawings and engineering schematics (AutoCAD).
  • Experience with SCADA Systems, Industrial networking (Ethernet/IP, Modbus) and data logging
  • Strong electrical, mechanical, and programming background.
  • Experience with advanced control strategies, such as model predictive control (MPC) and advanced process control (APC).
  • 10 or more years of experience in industrial control systems, preferably in recycling or manufacturing environments.

  • Bachelor's degree in Control Systems Automation, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related field - preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement maintenance and improvement measures for recycling equipment, including conveyors, shredders, optical sorters and material handling systems.
  • Collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with existing control systems and optimize the performance of control systems, ensuring efficient and reliable operations and improving operational outcomes.
  • Lead cross-functional projects from concept through commissioning, including budgeting, scheduling, and vendor coordination.
  • Analyzes system performance and implements improvements to maximize uptime, throughput, and efficiency.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for control systems, and ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulation, and industry standards in all control systems designs.
  • Support commissioning new equipment, retrofits of existing systems, and analysis of acquired equipment.
  • Champion a strong safety culture by incorporating industrial safety standards, including LO/TO, machine safeguarding, and electrical safety in all control and infrastructure projects.
  • Good communicator with the ability to translate findings in a strategic and tactical manner through investment opportunities.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
