Responsibilities: Leads and serves as a content expert in the design and development of technology and workflows to optimize the safety and efficiency of the organizations medication use system. Analyzes, plans, recommends, evaluates and translates clinical practice, operations, policy and procedures into electronic content and workflows. Functions as a mentor and leader on the team, possessing an expert level knowledge in the use and design of Epic, as well as technologies that support the safe and effective use of the enterprises pharmacy and medication use systems. Serves as a technical leader while serving as a mentor for the greater team and department. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Works collaboratively with departmental leadership, cross-functional technical teams, clinicians and health-care providers to design, implement and maintain the medication use system in the electronic health record (EHR) and associated technology. Ensures technology systems are designed and maintained in accordance with hospital policy, organizational IT policy, industry standards and are optimized for end-user workflow, patient care and engagement. Serves as a technology leader in departmental and enterprise level activities and integrated groups/committees. Utilizes expertise in healthcare information technology and clinical practice to drive outcomes focused on improving the care of patients, as well as the use of technology by clinicians. Serves as a mentor, coach and role model for all pharmacists in the department. Recognizes the importance of mentorship, education, and training and actively leads the design of professional education and learning opportunities, including the development of orientation plans for new pharmacists or staff. Maintains responsibility for the provision of comprehensive clinical pharmacy services related to area of practice to optimize technology in the medication use system. Maintains responsibilities for information management, knowledge delivery, data analytics, clinical informatics and change management. Identifies and leads coordinated investigation and resolution of medication use system problems and troubleshoots operational issues and problems with software applications. Communicates and coordinates problem solving with appropriate internal and external sources. Collaborates with appropriate leadership and partner groups/departments on issue notification and clinical/operational communications. Resolves problems with appropriate communication to all pertinent staff in a clear and concise manner and assists other staff members in creation of communication plan. Coordinates vendor assistance in issue resolution, as required, by application or departmental leadership. Advises pharmacy management on impact of information/automation system issues on patient care and department operations. Coordinates ongoing assessment of hardware needs to ensure maximum benefit of the systems. Works with Pharmacy management team on the development of pharmacy IT strategic plans. Develops and communicates project plans to pharmacy staff. Maintains communication between pharmacy departments and IT to provide updates and information regarding technology issues related to medication management. Represents the pharmacy informatics group in meetings at URMC and affiliates. Leads or participates in discussions surrounding utilization of EHR tools in relation to pharmacy workflows. Oversees the installation, implementation, maintenance and upgrade of pharmacy information and automation technology systems and pharmacy robot systems. Maintains expert knowledge of pharmacy applications and enhancements to maximize the department’s operations. Defines and documents pharmacy application testing requirements. Coordinates database development/updates, testing and maintenance for the pharmacy information systems. Assists with the development of policies and procedures for the use of the pharmacy information systems. Revises policies and procedures yearly or as necessary. Develops and maintains detailed policies on down-time procedures. Maintains a personal and professional commitment to ongoing development and service through active engagement in professional organizations, industry best practices, specialty boards, industry or professional organization events. Participates in training future generations of pharmacists and analysts by serving as a preceptor for pharmacy residency training programs offered at the University, contributes to student training experiences for IPPE and APPE rotations as assigned and provides didactic lectures, case studies and other interactive teaching programs to pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, and pharmacists. Leads discussion at departmental, hospital, URMC/UR Medicine and Affiliate committees or task forces. Provides educational support as requested by nursing, medical/surgical residents, students training in allied health professions. Leads the evolution of clinical practices, informatics, and technology innovation by serving as a content expert and presenting at the local, regional, and national level. Conducts or participates in research relevant to area of clinical practice, informatics, and technology, as needed. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Doctor of Pharmacy degree and 5 years of training or practice in informatics required Or equivalent combination of education and experience KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Strong attention to detail required Ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems and develop critical thinking skills required Solid technical aptitude and an understanding of computer systems and IT functions.
