Role Summary In this role, you'll support Rivian's Battery Pack technology development by preparing and characterizing various materials & components, building & assembling prototypes therefrom, testing them in advanced setups, and documenting the gathered data.

Requirements

  • High-school diploma with 5+ years experience, Associate’s degree with 2+ year experience, or Bachelor’s degree in materials, mechanical, or chemical engineering; experience preferably in lithium-ion battery development
  • Demonstrated understanding of lab safety protocols and the use of lab instruments/equipment (microscopes, thermal chambers, pumps, chillers, compressed gas cylinders, valves, temperature/pressure/strain/flow sensors)
  • Record of creating and building assemblies using machined/injection-molded/3d- printed components
  • Good understanding of general physics principles such as current, voltage, resistance, heat, pressure, flow, energy, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills to enable strong collaborations within and cross- functional teams
  • Strong organizational skills to stay focused on project goals as well as the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities

  • Work in an R&D lab environment doing hands-on activities involving lithium-ion battery cells and related components & materials while adhering to safety practices
  • Prepare samples of polymeric materials, such as adhesives, tapes, seals using precise dispense tools and equipment
  • Characterize samples for mechanical, thermal, electrical, and chemical properties using lab equipment
  • Preparing/following standard operating procedures (SOPs) as well as maintaining lab equipment
  • Assemble battery cells, related components, and sensors into prototypes
  • Build test setups with the above prototypes and various metrology/instruments to quantify the performance of various materials
  • Gather and organize the collected data using standardized software, such as LabVIEW and/or proprietary instrument software, spreadsheets.
  • Foster collaboration within the cross-functional teams and contribute to Rivian’s core values
