We are seeking a Sr. Nuclear Criticality Safety Engineer to join our team supporting the Oak Ridge National Laboratory ! This position is full-time and will be based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Requirements

  • Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Citizenship – To be considered, you MUST be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
  • Clearance – Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
  • Experience performing Criticality Accident Alarm System (CAAS) assessments.
  • Experience performing audits, surveillances, and assessments of the NCS Program.
  • Ability to perform calculations with Monte Carlo neutron transport codes.
  • Ability to perform hand calculations for criticality.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Strong communication, verbal and written skills.
  • Broad experience in the development and implementation of NCS Programs.

Responsibilities

  • Stops work without fear of reprisal for unsafe conditions potentially affecting personnel safety or environmental risk.
  • Assists in identification of the need for and/or development of Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) compliance training to support Isotek activities.
  • Maintains awareness of NCS-related operations within Project.
  • Participates in critiques/investigations involving NCS issues, as requested.
  • Provides field support of operations in nuclear criticality safety, including periodic surveillance and assessment of conformance to Nuclear Criticality Safety Approval (NCSA) requirements.
  • Supports building activities, such as construction and maintenance, to ensure criticality safety.
  • Reviews Work Packages, procedures, and other project documents to ensure compliance with NCS requirements.
  • Performs Criticality Accident Alarm System (CAAS) assessments.
  • Performs audits, surveillances, and assessments of the NCS Program.
  • Functions as primary interpretative authority on matters related to NCS Program.
  • Maintains knowledge of NCS-related standards, guides, and codes.
  • Prepares and peer reviews NCS documents such as: Fissile Material Operations (FMO) Screens, Nuclear Criticality Safety Evaluations (NCSEs), NCSAs, and NCS Reports (NCSRs).
  • Maintains familiarity with assigned FMOs.
  • Reviews and approves designs, plans, procedures, instructions and administrative aids that implement NCS requirements or potentially impact NCS.
  • Performs NCSE/A implementation walk downs and provides input to site emergency plans as requested.
  • Delivers NCS training and evaluates its effectiveness.
  • Reviews applicable facility Safety Basis documents for NCS issues.
  • Supports the execution of integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) guiding principles and core functions and the Safety Culture.
