About The Team And The Role About The Team eBay’s Search Services team is undergoing a transformative evolution as we redefine what world class, high-scale search looks like. The Search Services team is at the forefront of revolutionizing the eBay search experience, powering a suite of high performance services that ensure fast, accurate, and efficient search results. About The Role We are looking for a Sr. MTS Software Engineer (Staff Engineer) who combines deep technical expertise with a product-first mindset to help shape the future of eBay’s search experience. As a senior individual contributor, you’ll play a key role in designing and delivering scalable and resilient search infrastructure that directly impacts eBay’s core business. You will partner with engineering leadership, product teams, and other cross-functional stakeholders to drive initiatives from concept to production, while mentoring engineers and championing a culture of innovation, velocity, and excellence.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software design and development experience, solid foundation in computer science with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, and Software Design.
• Experience leading major initiatives successfully.
• Proven experience building and operating large-scale, low-latency systems in production.
• Experience improving quality through thoughtful code reviews, appropriate testing, proper rollout, monitoring, and proactive changes.
• Deep expertise in Java, Python, or a similar object-oriented language.
• Experienced in utilizing data and analysis to explain technical problems and providing detailed feedback and solutions.
• Experience in building large scale Web Services/ APIs (GraphQL/ gRPC/ REST).
• Strong systems thinking and a track record of setting long term architectural direction.
• Passion for mentorship, technical leadership, and working collaboratively across teams.
• Strong problem solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Masters degree in computer science or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with search infrastructure (e.g., Elasticsearch, Lucene) and information retrieval concepts is a strong plus.

• Cross-Functional Collaboration Collaborate with product, cross functional engineering teams and data scientists to align on business goals and technical execution.
• Influence multiple stakeholders and drive alignment on technical decisions.
• Mentorship & Team Development Mentor senior engineers and provide technical guidance to help them grow.
• Promote a culture of learning, innovation, and engineering excellence.
• Participate in hiring and team development, influencing talent strategy.
• Impact & Execution Translate company or organizational goals into actionable engineering plans.
• Deliver high quality results under tight timelines, often in ambiguous or evolving conditions.
• Make data informed tradeoffs and lead postmortem reviews and long-term fixes for critical issues.
• Innovation & Thought Leadership Stay ahead of industry trends and incorporate best practices into engineering strategies.
• Lead technical presentations, write design docs, and contribute to internal knowledge bases.
• Represent engineering in forums across the company, influencing technology strategy.
