About The Position

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of TeraWave, a satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center, and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations. We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the design, development, flight validation, assembly, integration, testing, and in-flight performance of the Terwave Payloads. This role will support payload hardware development from initial concept through flight. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work closely with Structures, Thermal, Electrical, and RF Engineers to develop RF components, phased-array and parabolic antennas, and related assemblies that meet high system performance requirements and can be manufactured at scale. You should be comfortable thriving in a fast-paced environment, translating ambiguous requirements into concrete execution in support of the Terawave product mission. We are seeking individuals who enjoy solving difficult problems, demonstrate a strong bias for action, and take extreme ownership of their work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 7+ Experience working in aerospace, satellite, automotive, or telecom production environment.
  • Experience designing enclosures and/or thermal solutions for high power electronics, high speed electronics, RF electronics, or telecom components.
  • Experience owning all aspects of electromechanical unit level development (design, thermal, structural, assembly, and test)
  • Experience working with high volume contract manufacturers.
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills - We are looking for leaders.
  • Mechanical design experience using CAD (Creo/Windchill preferred), hand calculations, and FEA (ANSYS preferred) tools.
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis (AMSE Y14.5).

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated expertise with any industry standard analysis codes: Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer.
  • Experience doing unit level structural sizing and designing electronics to survive harsh environments.
  • Experience doing unit level thermal design and designing electronics cooling solutions to survive harsh environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise with any industry standard analysis codes: Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer.
  • Experience designing and building electromechanical mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.100 and Y14.41.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end payload component design, from concept through fabrication and testing.
  • Develop and own mechanical requirements, and clearly communicate them to cross-functional partners to drive system development.
  • Perform initial structural and thermal sizing of components.
  • Rapidly iterate on designs through hands-on hardware development, bringing components from concept to rate production.
  • Generate design data, fabrication, and production drawings using GD&T to clearly communicate design intent and ensure low-cost, scalable manufacturability.
  • Drive tolerancing and statistical analysis into designs to meet production and quality targets.
  • Resolve manufacturing issues and work with vendors and internal stakeholders to disposition hardware on the production floor.
  • Create 3D models, detail part drawings, assemblies, installations, and interface control documents.
