About The Position

The University of Miami/UHealth Department of SCCC has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Sr. Manager, Research Laboratory to work at the UHealth medical campus in Miami, FL. CORE JOB SUMMARY The Sr. Manager, Research Laboratory provides scientific support and assistance to research laboratories, including all critical and basic laboratory operations. Moreover, the incumbent plans and implements overall laboratory policies, procedures, and services in furtherance of departmental and institutional goals and objectives. This Lab Manager will be a key member of the Molecular Therapeutics Shared Resource (MTSR) of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC). The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is currently seeking a Cancer Modeling – Sr. Manager, Research Laboratory who will join the Cancer Modeling Shared Resource. This translational Facility provides qualified, cost effective and state-of-the art services to foster cancer research advancements and accelerate the discovery of tailored antitumor therapies. We are seeking a dynamic individual who would like to participate in the creation and development of new service lines in a busy and fast-paced environment, mainly focused on the generation of state-of-the-art services necessary to generate novel mouse models of cancer using advanced techniques and technologies to produce and manipulate customized genetically engineered rodents. This person will directly assist the Director in running and implementing these new services to support researchers in the field of functional genomics, noninvasive imaging, digital pathology and disease modeling. The successful candidate will also participate in the planning and implementation of clinical and translational projects, preclinical implementation of cancer treatments including being responsible for the experimental design, procurement and validation of the services provided and models produced under the direction of Dr. Bilbao. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field in molecular biological, veterinary or biomedical sciences.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in field of genetic engineering and/or animal models.
  • Proactively helpful in all aspects of the job, whether it involves communication, training, reporting, or project/team management.
  • Mechanical ability and dexterity when performing the different lab-related techniques.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with general and specialized data analysis software and databases is required.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or specialized equipment.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology procedures, general laboratory operations and/or procedures, as well as knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering.
  • Self-motivated individual with a strong desire to learn.
  • Exceptional critical thinking and strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures efficient and effective departmental operations including department quality control and compliance adherence.
  • Formulates and implements short- and long-range goals for the operations of the laboratories.
  • Develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates systems to assess current and projected laboratory services.
  • Serves as a liaison between investigators, research personnel, and staff to resolve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.
  • Advises on technical procedures, techniques, and equipment, and maintains conformance with applicable operational standards.
  • Evaluates and recommends new techniques and technologies.
  • Manages and coordinates the activities of assigned project(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and resources.
  • Installs and maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations.
  • Assures that the laboratory technicians are properly trained in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements.
  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Ensure the implementation of the in vivo and histopathology-related services. These services include cancer modeling in vivo, transgenic services, noninvasive imaging, clinical chemistry assays, histopathology, in silico cancer modeling and AI.
  • Independently conduct research projects based on reviews of scientific literature and recent advances in related fields while contributing original/novel ideas of major methodological significance to projects, designing key experiments, and developing new techniques while ensuring the adequate integration with the rest of the services offered by the facility to provide state-of-the-art in vivo and digital pathology services.
  • Advises, supports, and trains relevant personnel on technical procedures, techniques, and reagents needed generating the required SOPs to support preclinical and translational services.
  • Manages and coordinates the activities of assigned project(s) with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and resources while evaluates best ways to improve desired outcomes together with the director.
  • Work with the director and the team to develop, adapt and implement new services and state-of-the-art technologies while maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the in vivo modeling and tissue-based research field including major advances and emerging trends.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures; safeguard University assets; participate in University/outside educational training as required.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
