The Sr. Manager, Engineering is responsible for strategic leadership of new product development and sustainment of instrumentation platforms that are part of the Microbiology business. This position reports to the VP and Managing Director of Beckman Microbiology and is part of the Research and Development Department for Beckman Microbiology located in West Sacramento, CA and will be an on-site role. In this role, you will have the opportunity to: Lead the Hardware Engineering organization strategically and operationally, providing strong technical and organizational direction. Develop resource plans, budgets, and project roadmaps in partnership with cross-functional business leaders to support product development. Ensure on-time, on-budget, high-quality delivery of NPI roadmaps using DBS tools to drive sustainable processes and problem-solving. Build a high-performing, diverse R&D organization by attracting, developing, and managing engineering talent. Drive continuous improvement and innovation by leading transformational initiatives, partnering across functions, and engaging with best‑in-class technologies, operations, and supply chain teams.

Requirements

  • Advanced engineering background (Bachelor’s with 12+ years or Master’s/PhD with 10+ years), including 4+ years of people management.
  • Extensive R&D and product development experience in regulated medical devices, including post‑launch design changes and work under quality management systems with design controls.
  • Proven ability to lead product development strategy and manage multiple NPI projects and budgets of varying complexity.
  • Experience coordinating hardware development alongside assay/reagent and software efforts using daily management or Agile methods.
  • Strong technical depth across detection technologies, software/firmware design, and test method development; effective, data-driven problem solver able to deliver under pressure.
