About The Position

The Sr. Legal Counsel is responsible for supporting senior leadership across a broad range of legal areas across the organization, with a focus on commercial transactions, employment matters, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation. Serve as a legal advisor to internal business units, offering practical and proactive legal advice that balances business goals with legal risk. The Associate General Counsel will be a trusted advisor to internal departments and help ensure the company's operations align with legal and ethical standards.

Requirements

  • JD from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Member in good standing of the Texas Bar and currently licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
  • 10+ years of progressive legal experience, including experience with employment law and with drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts.
  • Experience with data privacy regulations (e.g., CCPA, GDPR) and ESG compliance.
  • Familiarity with retail store operations, e-commerce, supply chain, or marketing law.
  • Previous experience working with or advising C-suite executives.
  • Exemplary written and oral communication; excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, proactively own processes and deliverables, and set/meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Abilities to respond to crises and challenges with confidence, confidentiality, professionalism, and flexibility.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues, assess risk, balance different perspectives and needs, and provide confident and concise business-focused support solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the General Counsel and executive leadership on broader legal strategy and compliance initiatives.
  • Act as a legal advisor to internal clients across finance, HR, merchandising, marketing, real estate, and IT functions to provide practical, actionable advice.
  • Provide management support to the At Home Foundation, the company's nonprofit fund that grants financial support to employees facing personal hardships or natural disasters.
  • Support training initiatives related to workplace conduct and legal compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations affecting the retail sector, including consumer protection, advertising, e-commerce, and data privacy.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining internal compliance programs and company policies.
  • Manage the commercial contract legal review process including negotiating, drafting, reviewing, interpreting, and otherwise supporting direct and indirect procurement contracts for all functional areas across the company; advise and make recommendations with regard to compliance, risk, and potential liabilities.
  • Counsel the HR team on employment-related matters including employee relations, policy development, performance management, investigations, and compliance with federal/state employment laws, including EEOC claims.
  • Assist in managing outside counsel in litigation, disputes, and regulatory investigations.
  • Take ownership of discreet legal initiatives as they arise based on changing business priorities.
  • Oversee the commercial and transactional workstreams including transportation and other indirect agreements.
  • Lead data privacy, CCPA compliance, and the handling of data privacy lawsuits (CIPA+).
  • Coordinate discovery, document production, and internal fact-gathering as needed.
